Unfortunately, Le Jaffe's address did not appear on the message I
received about this, so I am replying to the list. Sorry for any
inconvenience.
Lee, we had the same problem with the hard drives on the old 8088s.
Our repair tech tried putting in the newer hard drives with upgraded
power supplies, but then it turned out the new hard drives were
incompatible with our VGA monitor cards. I do know of a person
who upgraded an 8088 to an 80286, with similar chains of hardware
incompatibilities. After they replaced virtually the entire guts of
the machine they had something that would run. The feeling was that
it was cheaper in time and grief to buy a new machine than to attempt
the sort of upgrade you are describing. The original case and floppy
drives were about the only parts that ended up in the 'renovated'
machine. The display and power supply and video card all needed
to be replaced.

Here's a legitimate question, one where I hope some
technological expert out there can show me where I've
gone wrong through naivete or ignorance:
Is there some way in which a color CRT can display
more picture elements (pixels) than would be indicated
by dividing its live display-area width or height by
its dot pitch? That is: if the dot pitch of a monitor
is 0.31mm, and its useful display area is (say) 8" wide
by 6" high (thus, 203.2mm by 152.4mm), is there any way
that the monitor can display more than 655x491 pixels?
If there isn't, isn't it misleading (at best) to suggest
that such a monitor could display SVGA (800x600), even if
it can accept the signal?
(While the particular dimensions chosen are arbitrary,
the question isn't. If I'm right, then, given that the
horizontal measurement of a display area is roughly 0.85
times the diagonal measure, it is (for example) ludicrous
to speak of a 14" (typically, 13" displayable) monitor with
0.31mm dot pitch as able to display 1024x768: at that pitch,
15" visible diagonal measure is the smallest for this
resolution.)
This has been troubling me because so many 14" monitors
seem to say "1024x768"--and I don't think most of them
are physically capable of *displaying* that many pixels.
Am I missing something here?
