Position: ASSISTANT LIBRARY DIRECTOR [ALD] Full-time Exempt
Description:
The Marine Biological Laboratory is seeking candidates for the
position of Assistant Director for MBL Library Operations. Under
general supervision of the Library Director, the successful candidate
will lead, manage and coordinate library services in the MBL/WHOI
Library. S/he will demonstrate an understanding of information
technology, scholarly communication issues and the ongoing
transformation of new technologies, resource sharing and web delivery.
Duties:
Act as administrative head of library services. Engage in
continual examination of evolving user needs and plan and develop
services that enhance and support the research and instructional
information requirements of the laboratory. Provide in-depth
research consultation services, understand the scope of research
at the Laboratory, maintain a sophisticated knowledge of print
and electronic resources, manage ongoing operations, coordinate
work with all units in the library and serve on Joint Users
Committee, Staff Council, Library Administrative Management Team
and Cooperative Collections Committee of the Boston Library
Consortium.
Conditions:
Education:
Master's degree in information science or library science
and a second master's in the life sciences or medicine. Minimum of
five years of experience in progressively more responsible
positions in an academic, research or medical library. Experience
with a variety of library services including instructional services,
electronic information resources, web presence and collection
development. Expert knowledge of reference service and ability to
instruct in the biomedical sciences. Record of successful management
experience and demonstrated commitment to staff development.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate and supervise the work of others.
Strong commitment to service and proven ability to work effectively
with a diverse population of scientists, staff and students.
Comprehensive knowledge of the publishing industry, both traditional
and emerging. Strong written and oral communications skills and the
ability to communicate clearly in presentations. Demonstrated ability
to initiate, plan and implement new information services and
successful grantsmanship.
