NOTICE OF VACANCY
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, PROFESSOR/
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR TECHNICAL SERVICES
Iowa State University Library seeks applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Director for Technical Services.
Appointment Conditions: Tenure Track, 12-months, Full Time
Proposed Start Date: January 1, 2001
Responsibilities: The Assistant Director for Technical Services is a member of the library's upper-management team and is responsible for the development, administration, planning, and evaluation for the major technical service programs. As a member of the senior administrative group, shares responsibilities for developing and implementing the library-wide mission, goals and policies and coordinating initiatives with other key library managers, including the Collections Officer and the Information Technology Officer. Reports to the Dean of Library Services.
The Assistant Director provides creative leadership and direction in a service-directed environment; assumes a prominent role in divisional strategic planning and provides strong local, regional and national leadership for technical services. The division includes four departments (Acquisitions, Preservation, Serials and Monographs Original Cataloging, and Monographs Copy Cataloging) and 12 faculty librarians, 43 paraprofessional staff and 31 FTE student assistants.
Required Qualifications: ALA-accredited Master's degree. Ability to meet promotion and tenure standards and have a record of achievement appropriate to the associate professor or professor rank. Minimum of five years of successful management in at least one major technical services function as part of progressively more demanding managerial roles in academic or research libraries.
A substantial level of experience with integrated library systems; demonstrated vision for providing information services in a research environment that is responsive to users, current trends, and future needs; and a solid understanding of current issues in technical services.
Demonstrated planning, analytical, communication and interpersonal skills; record of dealing successfully with organizational change; experience in motivating others and functioning in a team-oriented environment while providing effective leadership and successful supervision of personnel; and ability to view issues from broad, library-wide perspectives.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in an academic research library and with planning and administering library-wide information technology projects.
Salary: $70,000 minimum, depending upon qualifications
Benefits: TIAA/CREF, excellent group medical, dental and life insurance; 24 working days annual vacation; and 18 days annual sick leave.
