Announcement of Vacancy
Title: Social Sciences Bibliographer, Librarian I, (PRO 068)
Responsibilities: Reporting to Coordinator of Social Sciences Collections,
selects materials in an area of the social sciences, manages the collection,
provides College or departmental liaison, develops resource guides, provides
specialized reference and library instruction in the social sciences, and
all other aspects of collection development in the assigned area. Also
provides scheduled reference services, including evening and weekend hours.
This librarian participates in professional development and research
activities and serves on library and university committees as elected or
assigned. Other appropriate duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited MLS degree (Fall 2000 graduates
are eligible and encouraged to apply); course work or background in the
social sciences; course work or background in electronic reference tools,
including the Internet; excellent oral and written communication skills;
ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff; ability to be
flexible in a dynamic environment; preparation and commitment to conduct
independent scholarship consistent with a librarian appointment; capacity
and commitment to engage independently in continuing professional
development. Desired: collection development experience; reference
experience; instructional experience.
Campus and Libraries: Michigan State University Libraries serve more than
2,000 faculty, 33,000 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate and professional
students on a park-like campus of over 5,000 acres. The Main Library and 14
branch libraries have combined holdings of over 4 million volumes. East
Lansing is a community of approximately 50,000 located adjacent to Lansing,
the state capital.
Compensation: $35,000 minimum. MSU provides generous fringe benefits.
