MASTERING WEB SEARCHING

A web-based course for honing your Web search skills!
The CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAM at the Faculty of Information Studies,
University of Toronto is offering MASTERING WEB SEARCHING, September 11 to
October 23, 2000
This course builds skills in using the Web-search tools and applying
strategies for better searches. The seminars cover subject guides and
directories, search engines, meta-searchers, desktop software, and
specialized tools. Students learn how to apply syntax in keyword searches,
locate specialty services, penetrate the Invisible Web, mine newsgroups and
mailing lists, find people, and much more.
The course is conducted entirely on the Internet using the Web, mail and
chat. The tours, exercises and assignments in this course, along with
direct tutoring, provide the hands-on experience needed to search the Net
more effectively.
DATES: September 11 to October 23, 2000
INSTRUCTOR: Gwen Harris is an information consultant specializing in the
Internet. She writes and speaks at conferences about Internet searching and
instructs in the Faculty of Information Studies Continuing Education program.
FEE: $290 Canadian ($210 US) The fee includes a six-month subscription to
The Internet Guide, a Web-based training and reference guide. (See demo at
http://conted.fis.utoronto.ca/TIG/Demo) Early registrants will be
immediately subscribed to The Internet Guide.
CERTIFICATES: A Certificate in Web Search Strategies is available for this
course. To be eligible, students must complete the weekly assignments and
write a one-hour exam at the end of the course. Additional Fee: $50

* Computer with Internet connection and personal e-mail account
* Browser software: minimum - Netscape 3.0 or Internet Explorer 3.0
