Appointment Terms: UWEX academic staff 100% fixed term
appointment. Initial appointment period ends
June 30, 1993. Annual renewal possible.
General Description
Consult with the editorial and production staff of the Journal of
Extension (JOE) (an international, peer-reviewed scholarly journal)
to research, develop, produce and evaluate standards-based
information technology methods and products that will enable the
successful use of an Internet-distributed "electronic" Journal of
Extension by its subscribers, contributors, editors, reviewers,
production staff and archival-searchers. Specific duties include:
- Consult with JOE faculty marketing committee on marketing and
Internet electronic-mail-based subscription fulfillment
efforts to reach all Extension System staff and appropriate
others interested in Extension distance education.
- Consult with JOE faculty editor and production staff to
develop SGML Document Type Definitions (DTD) for Journal of
Extension. Consult on markup tagging procedures. Develop
software that uses tagged Journal issue to produce multiple
document and image output-formats.
- Consult with JOE and Extension Computer Services staff on
methods needed to produce, disseminate and query an electronic
Journal of Extension through a variety of national network
services.
Accountability
The Associate Information Processing Consultant will be a member of
the Madison-based staff of the UWEX Cooperative Extension WISPLAN
Computer Services Unit.
Degree/area of specialization
Bachelor's degree required, Masters degree preferred, major in a
field related to information design and management, information
dissemination, or computer communication applications
Minimum number of years and relevant work experience
2 years experience computer-based electronic media applications,
including use of current Internet computer network services for
electronic mail distribution, file exchange and archival search and
retrieval of electronic documents.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and
American National Standard Z39.59-1988, "Electronic Manuscript
Preparation and Markup."
Familiarity with methods for document, database and multimedia
publishing that will produce multiple document and image output-
formats, including ASCII, WordPerfect 5.1, PostScript, Multimedia
Internet Mail Extensions (MIME), and Group III FAX.
Familiarity with Internet electronic-mail-enabled Almanac document-
server, Internet Gopher interactive protocol, Internet-accessible
PENpages, public switched telephone network FAX-server.
Familiarity with MS-DOS, Macintosh, Unix, Ultrix or NeXT operating
systems, particularly native text-processing software.
