We have had several "trojan horse" programs, BO2K and SubSeven, installed on our public access machines. We also have patrons who think it is their duty to change the desk top appearance, install their favorite programs or in general mess with the configuration of the machines. Just before the recent denial of service attacks on the larger internet sites we noticed a dramatic rise in the number of probes by sites in Europe. Our solution was to lock down the public machines so their configurations couldn't be changed and to install an effective firewall. I also monitor some of the hacker sites and alert sites to see what's going on. I also try to make sure all security patches are installed. Just because someone doesn't know they're under attack, doesn't mean the attack doesn't exist.
