I would assume that when the CDs are in a caddy, they must go into a
particular drive or brand of drive. When they're not in a caddy, they
go in a different drive. The difference is the drive, not the caddy.
It's possible, for example, that the CDs were made using CD-R media,
which will not be compatible with older drives, and a lot of caddy
drives are 'older'. I believe Plextor is the only company that still
makes caddy drives.
