Reminder! If you're interested in using the Web for publicity and
fundraising, come to "Virtual Contact, Real Dollars: Designing Web Pages
to Attract Donors" on Monday, July 10, from 2-4 in Chicago's McCormick
Convention Center, Room N427.

Experts from the public and academic library arenas will present an
overview of using the Web for library fundraising. Learn techniques for
catching the interest of potential donors, engaging them with your Web
site, and encouraging them to provide support for your library. The Fund
Raising and Financial Development Section of LAMA is the sponsor of this
program at the ALA Annual meeting.

Diana V. Smartt, Director of the Montville Township Public Library, will
begin the program by addressing components that are necessary on the home
page and through the site for attracting and keeping donors; the pros and
cons of fundraising techniques on the Web; and how to utilize a library
Web site in relation to other public relations, marketing, and development
vehicles.

Samuel Huang, Assistant Dean for External Relations at the University of
Arizona Library and Mark A. Williams, Archives Specialist at Northern
Illinois University will discuss creating a website for the library's
Friends group, including maintaining contact with the Friends through the
Web site; creating a recognition field in the online catalog; recognizing
donors via a Web site and the Internet; holding special events to thank
donors and adding photos to a Web site; and using traditional
correspondence for cultivation.

David King, Information Technology Librarian at the Kansas City Public
Library, will present a description of online pledges; Web gimmicks such
as online treasure hunts; electronic recognition; use of outside donation
services; online stores; and how to attract visitors to your Web
site. Examples of each of these areas in a public library environment
will be included.

James Morris-Knower, Public Services Librarian at Cornell University's
Mann Library, will round off the session with his "show and tell" about
how one academic library used a Web-based virtual tour as part of a $4
million endowment campaign. The presentation will include discussion of
where the idea came from; who the project team was; what was included (and
excluded) in the tour and why; highlights of the tour; some marketing
strategies; and a conclusion on the success of the tour as a part of the
campaign.
