YOU ARE INVITED to attend a hearing of the ALA Task Force on an Independent
Accreditation Body, on Sunday, July 9, 2000, from 2-4 p.m., in the Hyatt Regency
Hotel Columbus Rooms I and J.
This task force was created by ALA President Sarah Long in response to
recommendations made in spring 1999 at the Congress on Professional Education.
The task force has been asked to report with its final recommendations to the
ALA Council in June 2001. Thus far, it has created a draft proposal, addressing
alternative ways in which accreditation might better be accomplished for
programs leading to degrees in the library and information professions while
still retaining the strong voice of the profession in this process.
At this point, the task force needs the response, comments, and recommendations
of the profession at large. You are invited to join us in Chicago during the
annual conference of the American Library Association, to share your thoughts
and opinions with us.

The structure by which we educate people who enter the information professions
is critically important. We need your assistance as we continue to carry out
our charge, and look forward to seeing you on July 9.
