DALNET Database Management Librarian
The Detroit Area Library Network (DALNET), through Wayne State University
as its fiscal agent, seeks candidates with credentials to qualify for the
rank of librarian I, II or III for a full-time position as the DALNET
Database Management Librarian. This contract position is available
immediately and renewable annually
DALNET is a consortium of 21 academic, public, professional and museum
libraries located in southeast Michigan; DALNET libraries operate a shared
library information system named Im@gine, that uses Horizon software from
epixtech to automate library operations and to provide a common service
gateway. DALNET libraries provide access to more than 8 million items
through online catalogs of 4.5 million records. DALNET's vision is to
develop Im@gine into an information hub on the Web that not only links
together traditional library resources in the area, but also creates and
makes available new databases from unique resources found in the Detroit
metropolitan area.
The DALNET Database Management librarian position is currently housed at
Wayne State University (WSU), as is the support staff responsible for
overall DALNET database maintenance. DALNET is partnering with epixtech to
develop a union catalog and shared authority database for its online
catalogs.
Wayne State University is a Carnegie Research University I with a
commitment to teaching and learning excellence. The university's enrollment
of 31,000 students (18,400 undergraduates) makes it the 18th largest
university in the United States. WSU is located in an attractive urban
setting, surrounded by museums, theaters and corporate offices and is
easily accessible from several Detroit-area interstate freeways and Canada.

Responsibilities
The DALNET Database Management Librarian is responsible for the overall
quality control of the DALNET online catalogs and authority databases and
currently reports to the WSU Director of Technical Services and Systems.
The librarian:
- Supervises support staff and student workers performing database
maintenance tasks.
- Has a leadership role in designing and implementing DALNET's
union catalog and shared authority database.
- Serves as a resource person to the DALNET Database Standards
Committee.
- Using specialized report writing software, designs reports for
problem analysis and database maintenance.
- Analyzes and resolves problems and creates needed subject and
name authority records, following requirements for NACO contribution.
- Tests and manages batch loading and export of bibliographic and
authority records for DALNET's union catalog and shared authority
databases.
- Creates documentation, reports and procedures.
- Advises and helps train DALNET libraries' staff.
- Participates on the WSU Technical Services management team.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school; knowledge
of MARC bibliographic and authorities formats, AACR2 rev, LC rule
interpretations and LC practices; excellent verbal and written
communication skills; excellent analytical, organizational and
interpersonal skills; demonstrated computer skills; and credentials to
qualify for a Librarian I, II or III classification with the University
Library System.
Qualifications for a Librarian I Rank:
- Entry-level position (minimum requirements)
Qualifications for a Librarian II Rank:
- Demonstrated ability to carry out competently the range of
professional library functions pertaining to the primary assigned area of
librarianship.
- Evidence of the ability to work well independently, to make sound
decisions and to have constructive/productive interaction with colleagues.
- Potential for continuing professional growth.
Qualifications for a Librarian III Rank:
- Excellence in job performance and professional achievement, e.g.,
identifiable contributions to the development of librarianship in terms of
the services and activities of a particular library or of libraries in
general.
- Appointment at this level is based on the applicant's cumulative
professional record rather than on any single accomplishment.
- Must have achieved recognition within the profession; public
service which benefits the profession or the community is also considered
important.
Preferred: Cataloging experience; experience with relational databases and
SQL; experience with report writing and spreadsheet software; experience
with OCLC and with a client/server library system (Horizon preferred); NACO
training; supervisory experience; teaching ability; and evidence of
customer services orientation.
Salary and Benefits
Minimum salaries: Librarian I $34,000; Librarian II $37,000; Librarian III
$40,000. 22 days vacation per year, university holidays and excellent
fringe benefits, including TIAA/CREF or Fidelity, tuition assistance for
employees and family members and relocation assistance.
