Title: Coordinator for the Health Sciences, Librarian II or III (LIB 270)
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Associate Director for Collections
Management, is responsible for the oversight and coordination of the health
sciences librarians to meet the information needs of MSU students, faculty
and staff in the three community-based human health sciences colleges
(College of Human Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Osteopathic
Medicine) and the College of Veterinary Medicine. In consultation with the
Associate Director, works with the Colleges to develop increasingly
effective and efficient services. Supervises and coordinates selection and
ordering in all areas of the health sciences; an appropriate collections'
assignment will be made; Participates in and supervises librarians
responsible for providing specialized reference and library instruction
services, including departmental liaison; facilitates access to relevant
electronic reference tools, including the Internet. Coordinates efforts
with the Branch Library Coordinator and Head of Main Library Reference as
appropriate. Librarians are also expected to participate on university and
library committees and to be professionally active. The successful
candidate will hold or be expected to work towards AHIP certification.
Qualifications: Librarian II: Required: ALA-accredited MLS; a minimum of
three years progressively responsible library experience in medical
sciences; evidence of successful supervisory experience, including
organizational and administrative experience; demonstrated ability to take
on a leadership role in a rapidly changing environment; demonstrated ability
in the provision of health sciences reference and liaison services;
familiarity with electronic reference tools, including Internet resources;
excellent interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communication
skills; ability to work effectively with faculty, students and staff;
preparation and commitment to conduct independent scholarship consistent
with a librarian appointment; capacity and commitment to engage
independently in continuing professional development. Desired: AHIP
certification.
Librarian III: Required: Same as above, with a minimum five years
experience; Desired: Subject master's degree; AHIP certification.
Campus and Libraries: Michigan State University Libraries serve more than
4,000 faculty and academic staff, 34,000 undergraduates, and 9,000 graduate
and professional students in a park-like setting of over 5,000 acres. The
Main Library and 14 branch libraries have combined holdings of over 4
million volumes. East Lansing is a community of approximately 50,000
located adjacent to Lansing, the state capital.
Compensation: Librarian II $40,000, Librarian III $45,000 minimum salary.
