I am interested to see if any sites are thinking about the issues of
creating a patron database with patron records coming from multiple,
separate, administrative entities - and how one deals with the issue of
matching up records from these entities that are for the same patron, and
keeping the database up-to-date=A0 We need a solution that focuses on
computer technology and a MINIMUM of manual intervention.<br>

DALNET is a multi-type library consortia currently with databases
representing 13 separate organizations.=A0 We are interested in a
"shared patron file" which would be comprised or records from
each member.=A0 The shared file would have between 600,000 and 1,000,000
records.=A0 We have spoken with our systems vendor<i> </i>about this and
are reviewing our thinking prior to moving ahead on this.<br>

There are considerable legal ramifications of using Social Security
Number, so that is looking unlikely as an option.<br>
It is neither practical nor feasible to get all of these organization to
adopt a "DALNET ID" number that would be incorporated in their
local HR and student systems.<br>

We have three major goals:<br>
1. Ability to "derive" a patron record form the shared file
into the local patron file<br>
2. DALNET wide authentication - approximately 30% of our patrons have
multiple affiliations.=A0 We want them to be able to get all of the
resources to which they are entitled, from all of the institutions where
they have privileges - with a single authentication log on.<br>
3.=A0 The ability to share information about patron blocks for fines, lost
books, etc. among the member libraries<br>
