An article in the October, 1992 issue of DBMS (vol. 5, no. 11) by Joe
Celko brought to my attention another group that is working on standards
for full-text databases. Mr. Celko is a member of the ANSI X3H2 Database
Standards Committee and on p. 12 of his article he makes the following
statement:
We still need to get and SC3 [a new-project form] for a project
on full-text databases (a.k.a. textbases or document bases)...
Another group already concerned with textbases is the National
Information Standards Organization (NISO...) NISO is also
the ANSI Z39 committee and it already has a draft for a full-
text query language, but we are ignoring it and have no liaison
with the organization. I have no idea why this redundancy
exists, unless it is because NISO is the library and information
group and doesn't have the big computer software companies
behind it. If NISO doesn't object, X3H2 will simply take over
textbases completely.
Do any of the Z39 members have any perspectives on this and what
are its implications for the library and information community?
