Recipients on this list may be able to help me with an inquiry I had from a
school district that is considering migrating automation systems. The
school district is currently using Dynix Scholar on a unix platform. The
technology department is trying to move all applications to a Windows NT
environment implementing client/server technology.
This district has twenty-two sites. Collections vary at sites--some
locations have 20,000 others may have 30-50,000. Currently, the district is
considering Horizon or Follett. One bonus for Follett is that it
integrates with the existing student information system. Follett also has a
large school base. One concern the district has is that NT may not be
sufficient for such a large network and all the holdings. I'm sure much of
this will depend on how the network is set-up and the number of servers
used. Transfering reports is another concern. It's important that reports
can be set-up or even migrated into the new system. The district has an
extensive list of reports that will need to continue in the new system.
Are there any school districts on this list or multi-site libraries
currently using Follett or Horizon? Do you have advice to pass on, horror
stories, or other ideas? I do know of a large consortia in Colorado using
Follett, but I thought I'd send this out to the list as well. Any
suggestions/comments you have would be useful.
Thanks!
Rose
