Cataloger in the Hilles and Lamont Libraries
Harvard College Library
Harvard University

Reporting to the Head of Technical Services in the Lamont and Hilles
Libraries, serves as cataloger and assists in the administration of
technical services fostering a team approach to processing materials for
the two undergraduate libraries.

Supervises and executes cataloging of monographs in a broad range of
subjects, with an emphasis on music materials, and in all formats,
including audio and video recordings, scores, and computer files.
Supervises and trains support and student staff in Lamont in cataloging
functions; coordinates authority control procedures; oversees barcoding and
item record creation for currently received materials; develops procedures,
prepares documentation and complies statistics.  Maintains relationships
with other Harvard cataloging units for advice on cataloging special
materials and serves as source of information for library staff on policy
and procedures.

Serving as team leader, assists in the administration of technical
services. Coordinates and plans day-to-day activities of staff who perform
cataloging, acquisitions, and end processing functions.  Supervises student
staff in the technical services area in Lamont.  Serves as liaison with
Morse Music Librarian and other Hilles staff for issues related to
technical processing for Hilles.  Develops procedures and prepares
documentation for project-related activities; prepares narrative and
statistical reports on ongoing activities and special projects.  In
consultation with the Head of Technical Services, represents Lamont and
Hilles in University-wide discussions of cataloging and other technical
services activities.

As a member of the Lamont senior staff, participates in planning for
library operations and management of projects; meets regularly with
technical services staff and with supervisors in other functional areas to
ensure efficient and appropriate delivery of services to undergraduates;
provides HOLLIS training for technical services staff and participates in
training for staff in other areas of the library as part of an ongoing
training program.

Technical Services for the Hilles and Lamont Libraries is a fast-paced work
unit committed to providing support for two medium-sized undergraduate
libraries that serve students' study and front-line research needs in the
humanities and the social sciences. Emphasis is on the design of efficient
workflow and on the expediting of routine processing steps. Materials are
primarily English-language, mainstream publications in all formats:
approximately 10,000 items are catalogued in a typical year for the two
libraries combined. The unit, which is located in the Lamont Library, is
made up of 4 support staff and a significant number of part time student
staff.

Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school; demonstrated
supervisory and organizational skills; solid working knowledge of AACRII,
LC classification and subject heading systems, and authority control
procedures; some experience with the cataloging of nonprint materials
helpful; familiarity with OCLC or other major bibliographic utility;
familiarity with database and spreadsheet software.
