The following is a BRIEF summary of a LITA presentation on the
Common Command Language standard.
Z39.58: Common Command Language for Online
Interactive Information Retrieval
At LITA I attended a session on the current status of the Z39.58
standard -- Common Command Language for Online Interactive
Information Retrieval, prepared by NISO. For your information, here
is a summary of what has been finalized by the US NISO group and its
corresponding term in the European standard. It appeared that the
European standard is still being developed.
The International Standards Organization (ISO) is the standards body
for the European collaborative effort. Interestingly, the European
Common Command Language (CCL) is English-based. Unfortunately, a
few of the ISO terms differ from their US counterparts, but the ISO
terms that differ were chosen because they represented cognates
which made sense across a number of languages even in their
abbreviated forms. Dashes indicate terms for which no agreement has
been reached.
A handout included the NISO (US version) Command Summary with
definitions of all the US commands, with a bibliography on the
back for further reading about CCL. (Send name and FAX number if
you want a copy of this).
Thus far, DRA, OCLC (EPIC, for parts of the command language), and
NOTIS have implemented it.
There is no standardization of field labels because the committee
was not interested in making all systems look alike.
