Director of Indexes

The American Theological Library Association, a nonprofit association of 240
institutional and 600 individual members, seeks a Director of Indexes to
begin August 1, 2000.

The Director will supervise a Department of Indexes staff of ten, serve as
one of five Directors that head the ATLA administrative team, and have
administrative, budgetary, and supervisory responsibility for all Department
of Indexes activities and programs.  The primary duty of the Director of
Indexes is to guarantee the quality and timely annual production of the ATLA
Religion Database, and to oversee its evolution in an era of rapidly
changing standards and technologies.

The Director of Indexes must possess a thorough knowledge of current
indexing procedures and principles, a working knowledge of the ATLA Religion
Database, a familiarity and facility with inputting software and its
implementation, and a familiarity with data vendors (OCLC FirstSearch,
SilverPlatter, Ovid, EBSCO).  He or she will collaborate closely with
editors to coordinate Index production schedules.  The Director will also
represent ATLA and respond to members, customers, the public and other
organizations, including NISO, NFAIS, and ASIS.

Minimal qualifications include: Master's degree or at least three (3) years
of graduate study in a religious studies, humanities, or social sciences
field, or comparable experience in the study of religion; Minimum five (5)
years' supervisory experience in indexing, library technical services, or
publishing; Excellent written and oral communication skills; and
Demonstrable facility and comfort with evolving standards in the electronic
publishing field, including MARC format, XML, and Unicode.   Desirable
qualifications include: MLS, MIS or equivalent degree in library or
information sciences, and experience with digital projects and initiatives

Salary:  $40,000+, depending on qualifications.  ATLA provides excellent
