I remember that 1989 PACS-L posting by Caroline Arms. I was newly
- arrived at library school, from a long career in the commercial
world, and wondering what on earth could be the purpose of an
Internet "acceptable use policy".
Re - reading it now, Caroline's plaintive 1989, "I don't feel
that I am violating the non- commercial ethics of BITNET in
giving it [her book] a bit of a plug", offers real nostalgia --
"Whither is fled the visionary gleam? Where is it now, the glory
and the dream?..." -- I click on my RealPlayer as I write this,
and watch the latest online / Internet bump 'n grind rock video
from Britney Spears or Christina Aguilar... complete with sound
and banner ads...
That early wrestling, by Caroline and others, with the Internet's
"acceptable use policies" -- openly and online on PACS-L, where
all of us students could see and even join in ourselves --
clarified the significance of the new technology for me, and
ultimately provided me with an entirely new career. Forever
grateful to PACS-L for that.

ps: Caroline knew what she was doing, even way back then -- her
1989 posting notes, in addition to her "acceptable use policy"
excuse and explanation, "Order information is at the end"...
