Another (lurking) voice from the past!!

Much to my surprise, I find that I posted a message before Bernie. In
August 1989, I find a message in which I posted some paragraphs from
"Campus Strategies for Libraries and Electronic Information" as an attempt
to explain the difference between the Internet and BITNET. I remember
wondering hard about whether it was OK to give the book a plug and tell
people how they could get it. Remember, this was when commercial use of
these networks was frowned on. I decided that if I couldn't tell people on
a library list how they could get a book about libraries, that didn't make
much sense.

Editing that book persuaded me that interesting things would be going in
libraries -- for a computing person. Since then, I've spent 5 years in a
medical library and now close to 5 at the Library of Congress, with the
National Digital Library Program -- helping to bring you American Memory.
And I've lurked on the PACS-L list most of that time. For me part of the
value has been that I've been listening to what Walt, Bernie, Bill,
Millard, et al. have been saying for years and feel that I understand the
context for what they are saying even when it isn't explicit. It's been a
good way to maintain a sense of general progress.

And I'm still trying to explain technical things to the slightly less
technical -- and hoping people will actually read them. Here's another
plug!!

Getting the Picture:
Observations from the Library of Congress on Providing Online
Access to Pictorial Images

is the latest attempt to hit the web. Although, since it was published in
print first, it was close to a year between manuscript and publication.
One advantage of being a government employee is that it is at least in
the public domain and I could put it up on the web for free.

I'm delighted that PACS-L is alive again.
