Authority Control
Tuesday, April 11, 2000
9:00am - 4:00pm
Texas Library Association Conference
Houston, Texas
$65/TLA Members; $75/Non-Members
You've had your automation system for a few years; you understand how it
works and its eccentricities; you even understand enough of the MARC format
to get by. What is the next step?
Authority Control! Authority records help you bring consistency to the
entries in your database while allowing your patrons to view "See" and "See
Also" references in your catalog. They allow your patrons to easily broaden
or narrow their search.
Do you have "blind" references? When your patrons are looking for books
under the subject heading "Therbligs," do they see the infamous "No Items
Found?" Find out how to prevent taking your patrons down blind alleys and
how to redirect them to more productive areas of the catalog.
Scott Piepenburg, District Cataloger and System Administrator for the Dallas
Public Schools, will explain how authority control works in manual and
automated environments. Attendees will be able to see how changes to the
authority record affect the records your patrons see. Leave with an
understanding of authority control and how you can begin to implement it in
your library.
