Continuing Education Program at the Faculty of Information Studies, University of Toronto will be offering an Internet-based course on current awareness services on the Net, April 3 to May 15, 2000
This is a seven-week course conducted over the Internet. On completion of this course, you will:
· Be familiar with table of contents services for leading journals and related document delivery services.
· Know how to find electronic newsletters of interest
· Have evaluated the major filtered news services and customized some to your interests
· Know about the variety of services that will notify you of changes to a web page.
· Know the major news sources on the Web including online versions of newspapers, radio and TV transcripts.
· Have used personal agents for ongoing delivery of tailored information.
The first week will be orientation to the course and its resources. A certificate of completion is awarded to all who submit the six assignments for review and comment on some of the selected services.
Instructors: Gwen Harris and Rod Chapman are information consultants. Gwen Harris is the principal Internet instructor in the Faculty of Information Studies Continuing Education program, University of Toronto, and co-author of The Internet Guide. Rod Chapman is an information broker in Calgary, Alberta. His company, Knowledge Navigators, specializes in custom research and current awareness services for corporate clients.
Requirements: Computer with Internet connection and personal e-mail account. Browser software: Versions 4.0 and above of Netscape or Internet Explorer recommended.
Price: Price is $290 Canadian ($210 US) and includes a six-month subscription to The Internet Guide, an extensive web-based learning resource about the Internet. (See demo at http://www.fis.utoronto.ca/conted/TIG/Demo)
