ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, TECHNICAL AND AUTOMATED SERVICES
J.R. Van Pelt Library
Michigan Technological University

This is a unique opportunity to lead the development of innovative services
at a technologically progressive institution. The Van Pelt Library seeks a
dynamic, forward-looking individual capable of providing vision and guiding
implementation of emerging library technologies, leading a diverse team to
accomplish the coordination of library automation activities and promoting
digital information initiatives to our campus community.

Michigan Technological University is a leading research university, an
Internet 2 institution, and the Upper Midwest's only public technological
university supporting programs in engineering, the sciences, business,
technology, communications, and forestry.  It is located in Michigan's
scenic Upper Peninsula and has over 6,000 students enrolled in its
undergraduate and graduate programs.   The J. Robert Van Pelt Library
employs a staff of 40 and uses a team-oriented approach to problem solving
in a rapidly changing environment.

OVERVIEW OF POSITION
Responsible for all facets of Technical and Automated Services, and for the
ongoing management and coordination of all library automation activities.
As a member of the Library's senior management team, the Assistant Director
will participate in long term planning, budgeting and management of the
Library. This position reports to the Library Director and manages a unit
employing 9 full-time staff. Further details concerning the position and

REQUIRED
ALA accredited graduate degree in library or information science. Five
years progressively responsible professional library experience in both
systems and technical services. Supervisory experience. Demonstrated
understanding of emerging technological innovations in support of all
library service functions. Demonstrated familiarity with cataloging and
acquisitions issues and technologies. Demonstrated excellent leadership,
communication, and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to accept
and manage change, and set priorities. Demonstrated knowledge of AACR2 and
MARC formats. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team as
well as independently.

DESIRABLE
Professional experience in an academic library. Budgeting experience.

BENEFITS
Salary will be commensurate with education and experience; salary
considerations will begin at $45,000.  Excellent benefits package available.
