DISTANCE LEARNING AND LIBRARY SERVICES
Friday, October 1, 1999
Mckinley Park Inn
Blasdell, NY
The ubiquity of the Internet is fostering the explosive growth of
distance
learning programs. Colleges are inventing new ways of reaching students
and
libraries will have to re-invent themselves to keep pace.
The Western New York/Ontario chapter of the Association of College and
Research Libraries (ACRL) would like to invite you to a day-long
workshop
exploring the increasingly important issues relating to Library Services
for Distance Learners. The Conference will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30
p.m. on
October 1, 1999 at the Mckinley Park Inn, in Blasdell, NY, suburb of
Buffalo. A summary of the program appears below. Complete Conference
Information,
including registration forms, and directions to the Conference site, can
be
found on the Western New York/Ontario ACRL's web site:

Online Learning: The Changing University Landscape
Aldo Caputo has an M.A. in Learning Sciences from Northwestern
University
in Chicago, where his research involved computer-mediated communication
and
learning. He is currently Manager of Faculty and Instructional Support
Services at the University of Guelph and is responsible for providing
instructional and curriculum development support for courses employing
learning technologies.
Presentation Abstract:
Technology is having a profound effect on the way learning happens in
our
educational institutions. Not only is it shaping the way courses are
designed and delivered, but it is also affecting the way students access
information and the skills they will require beyond graduation. In
order
for any institution to be successful, it will have to recognize and
respond
to all these trends and needs.
This presentation will focus on changing nature of the learning
environment, the implications of these changes for the support
infrastructure within a
university, and finally, the critical themes that emerge out of this
uncertainty.

Distance Learning, Libraries, and Librarians: An Overview
Marilyn Moody is currently Director of the Science and Engineering
Library
at the State University of New York at Buffalo. She has taken a leading
role in the development and use of electronic information resources in
the
University Libraries and is currently involved in several efforts to
introduce new technologies into the teaching and learning process.
Presentation Abstract
What kinds of distance learning are taking place in higher education?
How
do asynchronous and synchronous distance learning differ, and what are
some
examples of each? What kinds of services are libraries offering to
distance learners? Why should all academic librarians be concerned
about the impact
of distance learning on their campuses and libraries?
This presentation will provide librarians with an overview of the issues
surrounding distance learning and a general familiarity with the kinds
of
distance learning taking place in higher education. Examples of
Web-based
distance learning and library services delivered through the Web will be
particularly highlighted.

Distance Learning: the Student Perspective
Kathleen Wilkinson is a reference librarian in the Management Library at
the University of Rochester, where she has worked in various positions
for many
years after having received an M.L.S. from SUNY Geneseo.
Presentation Abstract:
Ms. Wilkinson is currently enrolled part time in the School of Nursing
at
the University of Rochester, where she has encountered distance learning
as
a student. She will discuss the student perspective of off-campus
learning:
interacting with classmates and the instructor, getting reserve
materials,
using the course software. She will also discuss the benefits and
pitfalls
of distance education from the student perspective.

Library Training for Distance Learners
Marianne Buehler received an M.A. in Information Resources and Library
Science from the University of Arizona in 1998 where her research
interests
focused on distance learning and information-seeking behaviors. She is
currently Library Coordinator of Distance Learning at the Rochester
Institute of Technology. Professional activities include distance
learning
presentations at ALA and a position on the Electronic Resources
Committee
of ACRL's Distance Learning section.
Presentation Abstract
What are some of the ways libraries can instruct distance learners on
how
to use the library in a virtual environment? What do librarians need to
consider in creating instruction materials for students who may be
geographically distributed around the globe? Keeping in mind different
learning styles, disabilities, and computer / technology abilities,
librarians need to tailor library instruction accordingly.

Electronic Reserves
Eileen O'Hara is Head of Circulation/Reserves at Drake Library at SUNY
Brockport. In early 1998 she recommended and implemented an electronic
reserves system, which became operational in July 1998.
Presentation Abstract
Choosing, implementing, and maintaining an electronic reserves system
will
be explored. The vendor package E-Res by Docutek will be demonstrated.
This workshop will relate SUNY Brockport's experience in bringing up a
complete electronic reserves system. Staffing, use patterns, student
and
faculty responses, copyright, and costs will be discussed as well.
