                        ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY

                   DIGITAL LIBRARY PROJECT LIBRARIAN
                   DIGITAL LIBRARY PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
                        UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
        (1 Year Term Appointment with possibility of extension)

The Digital Library Initiative (DLI), a part of the University of Michigan
Library, is UM's key organization for creation, deployment and support of
local digital library collections.  Within the DLI, Digital Library
Program Development (DLPD) and the Digital Library Production Services
(DLPS) develop models and provide production level support for electronic
library collections in a number of subject and format areas.  Online
collection resources include significant image- and text-based journal
collections, art image collections, and a leading edge SGML/XML
development effort.

DUTIES:  The Project Librarian will work with the DLPD Librarian and
collaborate with other staff to explore and specify viable models for the
delivery and management of digital library content and services.  Projects
involve work with publishers and coordination with staff within the
Library, ITD, School of Information, and the Media Union.  Position will
have responsibilities to coordinate tasks, handle components of specific
projects, and contribute to digital library access systems development for
specific collections, as designated by the DLPD Librarian.  Project
assignments may include designing models for online journal publishing and
assisting in the development of a Numeric Data Initiative.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: ALA accredited MLS.  Experience in creating and editing
documents using HTML.  Experience in working with information resources,
document analysis, and implementing resources on the WWW.  Ability to work
independently.  Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff, faculty, and students
of culturally diverse backgrounds.
Desired:  Knowledge of publisher environment.  Experience with SGML/XML.
Knowledge of UNIX, Perl, CGI, JavaScript and/or database applications.
Second graduate degree in a subject area requiring intensive use of
library resources.

RANK, SALARY, & LEAVE:  Rank of Assistant Librarian. Final salary
dependent on years of previous relevant professional experience. (Minimum
salary - $32,000); 24 working days of  vacation a year; 15 days of sick
leave a year with provisions for extended benefits.

RETIREMENT PLAN:  TIAA/CREF retirement plan; Fidelity Investments.
