MASTERING WEB SEARCHING

A web-based course to hone your Web search skills and have fun too!
The CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAM at the Faculty of Information Studies,
University of Toronto is offering MASTERING WEB SEARCHING, September 6 to
October 18, 1999.
This course builds skills in using the Web-search tools and applying
strategies for better searches. The seminars cover subject guides and
directories, search engines, meta-searchers, desktop software. Students
learn how to apply syntax in keyword searches, mine newsgroups and mailing
lists, locate specialty services, find people, and much more.
The course is conducted entirely on the Internet using the Web, mail and
chat. The tours, exercises and assignments in this course, along with
direct tutoring from the instructor, provides the hands-on experience
needed to search the Net more effectively.
INSTRUCTOR: Gwen Harris is an information consultant specializing in the
Internet. She is co-author of The Internet Guide, and instructs in the
Faculty of Information Studies Continuing Education program.
FEE: $290 Canadian ($210 US)
The fee includes a six-month subscription to The Internet Guide, the award
winning Web-based training and reference guide by instructors Gwen Harris
and Sandra Wood (value $75 Canadian). (See demo at

immediately subscribed to The Internet Guide.
CERTIFICATE: A certificate in Web Search Strategies is available for this
course. To be eligible, students must complete the weekly assignments and
write a one-hour, online exam at the end of the course. Fee: $50 People
who do not write the exam but do the assignments will receive a certificate
of completion.
