Science Reference Librarian/Physical Sciences Specialist

The University of Chicago Library, the John Crerar Library, seeks
applicants for the newly created dynamic and exciting position of
Science Reference Librarian/Physical Sciences Specialist.  Join a
team of six reference librarians and bibliographers in assisting
users with electronic and traditional resources in a dynamic
research environment.  The John Crerar Library at the University
of Chicago is one of the nations outstanding libraries containing
over 1,000,000 volumes in science, medicine and technology.

Under the general direction of the Science Librarian, the successful
candidate works with colleagues to determine departmental activities
and priorities in an energetic, innovative atmosphere.  Participates
in scheduled science reference service, including evening and
weekend rotations, to University faculty, students, staff, corporate
members, and the general public.  Special emphasis is placed on
service and communication to the Physical Sciences Division and the
Undergraduate College.   Interacts with faculty and students to
identify information needs; develops and distributes appropriate
public relations materials.   Creates and maintains general science,
subject, and departmental web pages; edits and coordinates
publication of science library electronic newsletters, creates
subject pathfinders in conjunction with bibliographers, and
develops and manages public science exhibits.  Conducts formal
and informal library orientation and instruction in the use of
print and electronic resources; and supports departmental
processing and operational activities as assigned.  Other
responsibilities include service on library-wide committees and
task forces and participation in local, regional, and national
professional and scholarly organizations.  A more detailed job

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required: Masters degree from an ALA-accredited
library school; basic knowledge of print and electronic science
reference materials; basic knowledge of bibliographic and scientific
terms.  As demonstrated by work experience, strong human relations,
analytical, and conceptual skills to handle the demands of reference
service with accuracy and poise are required.  Ability to communicate
effectively and work well with colleagues and library patrons
individually and in groups is essential.  A commitment to ongoing
professional development is important.  Highly Desirable: one to
five years professional reference experience in an academic science
or medical library; Bachelors degree or significant coursework in
a physical sciences discipline; familiarity with HTML, web design,
and productivity software (such as MS Office); demonstrated
knowledge of current and developing information technologies and
their applications to reference activities; database searching
experience; basic reading knowledge of a foreign language,
preferably German, French, or Russian.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Appointment salary based on qualifications
and experience.  Salary range begins at $33,475.  Benefits include
retirement plan, insurance, and paid time off.  There is a
tuition benefit plan for college age and younger children.
