EOS International Q series claims (http://www.eosintl.com/htdocs/q.html):
"The Q Series forgives misspellings, can return search results
ranked in order of relevancy or in title order, and allows "more
like this" searches with its Query by Example capability."
Never seen it in action though.

Miriam Bobkoff asked about spelling approximation in OPACs. I worked in a
medical library that had a "home grown" OPAC that did spelling approximation
quite nicely in 1973. It is not at all difficult and well described in the
literature.
Here, however, is a much more interesting feature of amazon.com that I wish
my public library had. I got this Email this morning:

Dear Amazon.com Customer,
As someone who's purchased CDs by Eric Clapton in the past, you might like
to know about "Supernatural," the latest release by Santana. Clapton is
among a slew of guest stars who appear on Santana's latest, including Dave
Matthews, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Eagle Eye Cherry, as Santana fuses
his classic Latin lyricism with contemporary sounds. For the next few days,
you can order your copy of "Supernatural" at a savings of 30% by following
the link below:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000J7J4/ref=mk_pbm_6
As an added bonus, you can also download two tracks from "Supernatural" for
free-exclusively at Amazon.com. Download and listen to full-length versions
of "The Calling" (with Clapton) and "Put Your Lights On" (with
alterna-rapper Everlast) in our new download area. Lyle Lovett, Rufus
Wainwright, Cowboy Junkies, and Widespread Panic are just a few of the other
artists whose songs are now available for your downloading and listening
pleasure at:

I would rather risk failure than achieve it without risk.
