Unlike our colleague, I do not have access to 'a great deal of "techn=
ical
help" elsewhere, and a lot about "computers" and "systems"'. I turn t=
o this
list as a forum for obtaining support to "Public Access Computing" of=
all
types. I have been operating under the impression that PACS-L stood f=
or
(please correct me if I am mistaken) Public Access Computing Systems =
-
Library.
My recent request for information pertaining to "public" access (in t=
his case,
students) via the Internet of CD-ROM products yielded two results, on=
ly one of
which was helpful. I would not have had access to this information in=
as
concise a form anywhere else without someone trying to sell me someth=
ing.
So, should is the general reaction to this this forum stating that it=
should
emphasize "information" issues like censorship and Internet access fo=
r
children (which seems more to be an appropriate topic of discussion i=
n
LIBREF-L), or should we be discussing issues pertaining to the proble=
ms
relating to the interface that we present to the public?
If it is the former, would one or more members of our august body ple=
ase
direct me to where I can find the latter?

As a member of the ALA\LITA Top Technology Trends Committee, I have greatly
enjoyed the stimulating discussions that occurred in the two meeting
sessions to date, plus a few electronic discussions on specific topic in
library technology. Many of these discussions have had a strong bearing on
services to the public. One of the most recent topics that were discussed
was the use of Amazon.com as a service model for libraries.

One option for the future of PACS-L would be to take some of these
discussion themes to this list. This would enable another mechanism for
sharing, would provide a wider forum for discussion that would incorporate
people not active in ALA, including our international colleagues. Other
discussions theme could also be brought in as well.
This may provide an excellent forum to rejuvinate PACS-L.
