Melissa Brenneman's note is an important PACS-L posting........

I am a charter PACS-L subscriber and contributor. I subscribed and
started posting at least ten years ago. At that time, PACS-L was
vibrant and important. PACS-L was THE listserv for folks interested
in issues relating to public access computing in libraries.

Since then, countless other lists and discussion groups have
popped up to deal with these issues. Recently, as part of a
library and information science class project, I was asked by a
student which library related lists I subscribed to. I noted the following
about PACS-L:

"The following listserv used to be indispensable. Ten years ago it was
one of the few library listservs, and THE pre-eminent listserv for
discussion of libraries and information technology. I was a charter
subscriber. Now it's only marginal, and has been displaced to a
great extent by lists like Web4Lib, etc."

I'm not saying PACS-L should close down. Not at all! But I think I am
saying that perhaps now is a good opportunity to assess the purpose
and role of PACS-L. PACS-L was founded at a time when no other
listserv filled this role. Perhaps now we should review the role and
purpose of PACS-L, and try to revitalize the list??
