Position: Coordinator, Interlibrary and Document Delivery Services
Appointment Rank: Assistant or Associate Professor
Salary: Assistant Professor minimum $35,000;
Associate Professor minimum $42,000

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) Libraries is poised to
redesign our traditional Interlibrary loan and campus delivery systems
into a more efficient, innovative user-centered service. The Libraries
are seeking a creative, action-oriented individual to configure and lead
a new unit. This person will:
build a cohesive team with a new mission and vision statement for
library document delivery services;
assume a leadership role on campus and in the profession with regard to
document delivery and access issues;
maintain an awareness of national trends and technological advancement
in the field of document delivery and interlibrary services;
augment patron-initiated services;
facilitate opportunities for cooperative ventures.
The current Interlibrary Services unit has 5 non-exempt staff and
handled approximately 70,000 borrowing and lending transactions in the
last reporting year. Library Express, our campus pick-up and delivery
service, has one non-exempt staff member and averages 2500 transactions
per month. These units will merge as the new Interlibrary and
Document Delivery service unit within the Reference and Instructional
Services Team.
Responsibilities: Lead the library in defining and initiating
innovative, user-focused and cost-effective interlibrary and delivery
services both on-campus and off-campus. Coordinate interlibrary
borrowing, lending, and document supply activities, using OCLC, DOCLINE,
UnCover, and/or other full-text document delivery services. Monitor and
evaluate unit workflow; implement new technologies to optimize the
delivery of information resources to UTK clientele. Work closely with
Off-campus Services Librarian to meet the needs of distance education
faculty and students. Collaborate with colleagues at local, state, and
national levels to facilitate user access to information outside our
collection. As a member of the Reference and Instructional Services
team, work with team leader, other coordinators, and reference
librarians to plan for pro-active research and reference services.
Serve on library and campus committees and task forces and participate
actively in professional organizations. Opportunity exists for
collection development/subject liaison assignment. Position reports to
the Head, Reference and Instructional Services.
Qualifications:
Required: ALA-accredited MLS. Several years experience providing
interlibrary and/or document delivery service. Familiarity with
current and emerging technologies, particularly in support of
user-centered document delivery services characterized by rapid change
and growing demand. Organizational and managerial skills as
demonstrated through successful project management. Creativity,
flexibility, and the ability to frame issues and make decisions. Strong
customer service orientation and team building skills, combined with
excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Working knowledge of
major bibliographic tools.
Preferred: Post-MLS experience in an academic or research library;
management or supervisory experience; experience with OCLC or other
automated interlibrary loan systems; familiarity with intellectual
property issues in a networked environment.
BENEFITS: Librarians at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville have
faculty rank and status and are appointed for twelve months. This is a
tenure track appointment. Library faculty must meet University
requirements for promotion and tenure. Annual leave is accrued at the
rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per
month. Faculty have their choice of a state retirement plan or
TIAA/CREF. Non-refundable contributions to either retirement plan are
paid for the employee by the University. Group health and life insurance
plans are available. Tuition remission is available for all university
employees; partial undergraduate tuition remission is available to
dependent children and spouses of UT employees.
ENVIRONMENT: The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a Carnegie Research
Level One institution, enrolls approximately 26,000 students from every
state in the United States and approximately 100 other countries. As
Tennessee's comprehensive campus, UTK offers more doctoral programs than
any other institution in the state, and its faculty attract nearly $80
million annually for sponsored research programs. UTK is one of 27
higher education institutions holding the distinction of being both a
land-grant institution and state university.
The UTK Libraries, with an annual budget of approximately $10 million,
holds over 2 million volumes and receives approximately 10,000 current
serials. The Libraries system includes the John C. Hodges Library and
four branches on the Knoxville campus: Agriculture-Veterinary Medicine,
Map, Music, and University Archives and Special Collections. A fifth
branch, the Social Work Library, is located in Nashville. Over three
hundred persons are employed, including 51 librarians, 8 exempt, 123
non-exempt, and 150 students. UTK Libraries is a member of the
Association of Research Libraries, SOLINET, and the Center for Research
Libraries. The UTK Libraries installed a client-server integrated system
in 1997. The Libraries also offers a Web-based information system and
access to a variety of electronic information sources.
