EMORY UNIVERSITY, General Libraries invites applications for the position
of Web/Systems Developer.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Develops, coordinates and leads the design
and maintenance of a variety of library web infrastructure and electronic
projects. Consults with library & ITD staff to understand service issues
and develop technical solutions. Provides technical expertise and
instruction on applications, technical tools and software for library
staff. Provides technical direction to library coordinating and planning
groups.
EXPANDED DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Advanced Web Development Expertise and Management:
In a team environment of shared responsibilities, serves as lead
web developer and administrator for the libraries internet and intranet
web services by designing and implementing interface capabilities, as well
as system architectural elements, and the on-going technical development
of the web site. Serves as the coordinator for web-page content
developers and other web-based projects. Promotes staff knowledge of
web-based technologies; identifies needs for and promotes training
opportunities. Documents the development of the web infrastructure.
Library Electronic Projects:
Develops and implements electronic projects for a variety of new
library technology initiatives. Works as member of library systems office
and library planning groups to identify project priorities. Works with
team members from library systems office and other library units to
understand user requirements, plan projects, develop designs and
implementation schedules, identify costs/resources, create documentation,
provide training and determine ongoing maintenance plans. Ensures that
project deadlines are met in a timely fashion. Projects will include
completion of a virtual chemistry library project as well as related
contributions of systems expertise to the development of technology in a
new library for the physical sciences, currently in the program planning
stage.
Systems Administration:
As member of a systems administration team, designs, configures,
installs, and manages operations of servers in pursuit of library
electronic projects and goals. Write computer programs to automate
administrative processes/procedures, including staff intranet functions
and applications.
Future Technology: Provides expertise and serves as a technical resource
in identifying technological developments that facilitate the work and
communication processes in the library. Stays abreast of future trends in
information technology by following technical literature and experimenting
with advanced system features in order to make recommendations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: master's degree in library/information science OR a
field appropriate to the development of electronic projects. Two years of
relevant information technology experience in an academic/research library
or academic/research center environment. Expertise in development and
implementation of electronic projects in a team environment. Excellent
skills in documentation and in communicating with non-technical audiences.
Demonstrated knowledge of MS Windows NT 4.0, server and workstation
operating systems, as well as demonstrated development knowledge of an
application/CGI development environment such as Java, Cold Fusion, Visual
Basic, Active Server Programming, or PERL.
Preferred: Demonstrated knowledge of additional operating systems
(particularly NetWare and Unix). Experience in administering academic
library desktop and/or LAN systems, particularly CD-ROM servers.
EMORY LIBRARIES: The libraries of Emory University hold 2.3 million
volumes and employ a total of 263 FTE. In addition to the General
Libraries, there are libraries for health sciences, law, theology, and
Oxford College. The General Libraries, in partnership with the
Information Technology Division, are developing a program of services to
enhance access to networked information resources. The Emory Libraries
are members of the Association of Research Libraries, OCLC, the Research
Libraries Group, the Center for Research Libraries, the Coalition for
Networked Information, the Digital Library Federation, and the Atlanta
Regional Consortium for Higher Education.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary and rank dependent upon qualifications and

Responsibilities: Librarians function as information consultants focusing on
information and research needs in specific areas. Information
Consultants/Librarians work closely with faculty in instructional and research
programs, building active partnerships as they assess information needs,
locate and deliver relevant information, and promote information competency
skills. Additionally, Librarian/Information Consultants participate in
Reference Services and develop information resources in specific areas.
Environment: The Library and Information Center is central to the Institute's
instructional and research programs. The Georgia Institute of Technology,
with nearly 20,000 faculty, students and staff, is one of the nation's
outstanding universities, with nationally recognized academic programs in
science and engineering.
Qualifications: Required: ALA accredited MLS. Undergraduate or graduate
degree in appropriate subject field. Two years' experience in marketing/
promoting and providing information services in a special or academic library.
Experience in the use of electronic and networked resources. Knowledge
of current and emerging information technologies. Ability to work effectively
with all levels of customers and colleagues in rapidly changing and technology
intensive environment. Effective communication interpersonal skills. All new
employees must demonstrate employment eligibility verification as required by
the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Services.
Salary: Salary is no less than $45,000. Librarians are members of the General
