Workshop: Reference Services--New Roles, Responsibilities and
Opportunities
A Workshop
June 24-25, 1999
Holiday Inn SelectQAirport
New Orleans, Lousiana
Technology, networks, and the Web are having an enormous impact on the
organization and delivery of reference and information services. It is
now common to hear librarians pondering the future of reference services.
Without question, the traditional reference service environment is being
transformed as more and more information seekers routinely consult
information sources remote to the library.
Many questions about reference services come to mind?
* How does the library fit into this new environment?
* What value-added features can librarians include in a web-based
environment?
* What levels of service can be offered?
* What will be the role of collaboration?
* What qualifications will staff need to have?
* What new opportunities await innovative librarians?
Participants will explore these issues and formulate responses that are
relevant to their own libraries.
WHAT WILL PARTICIPANTS LEARN:
* To visualize what new reference services models might look like back
home;
* Innovations others have found to be successful;
* How to create a service model that would spell success back home;
* Action planning techniques for implementing desired changes.
THE WORKSHOP DESIGN
DAA workshops are designed to provide participants with practical planning
tools that can be used back home. Programs are structured so that
participants have ample opportunities to draw on the energy, excitement
and rich variety of experiences others bring to the event.
Participants can expect a variety of relevant topics to be addressed
during the workshop. The design incorporates a variety of brainstorming
activities and small and large group discussions and activities. The
schedule illustrates in broad strokes the structure and range of topics
the workshop will include.
WORKSHOP HANDBOOK
To enable participants to focus on learning rather than taking notes, a
post-workshop handbook that includes an overview and summary of the
processes used, and compilations of the data generated will be distributed
following the workshop.
