This is a reminder that the deadline for submission of papers for the
VALA conference in Australia is 28 April 1999.


 PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

 CALL FOR PAPERS - DEADLINE 28 APRIL, 1999
 You are invited to submit abstracts addressing technologies for the
 hybrid library, including electronic and digital management of
 information.  Possible topics might include (but are not limited to):

 Enabling Technologies
 . Metadata
 . Marc - evolving and merging with metadata
 . Z39.50
 . Mark-up languages:
  SGML, XML, RDF
  Structured documents
 . User authentication and certification
 . Digital publishing
 . Digital paper, wearable computers
 . Transponders, fringe technology
 . Perpetual access mechanisms

 Services
 . Who are the users?
 . Virtual libraries
 . The Internet as public library?
 . E-commerce
 . Value-added services and systems

 User Issues
 . User interfaces
 . Psychology of Internet usage (for example, chat)
 . Information for the resource poor in the IT age

 Business Strategies/Management
 . Integrating library systems
 . Planning and implementing new technologies

 PREPARATION OF YOUR ABSTRACT
 . The abstract, being a precis of your paper, should be about 300 to
500 words.
 . The heading must include the title of your paper, followed by the
 names and affiliations of the authors and the name and address,
 telephone, facsimile and e-mail address of the author who will be
 presenting the paper at the conference.

 . Acceptance or otherwise is at the discretion of the Conference
 Programme Committee.  The presenting author will be advised in writing
 of the Committee's decision during June 1999.

 . On acceptance of abstracts, authors will be provided with an author's
 kit.  Full copies of your paper are required to be forwarded to Waldron
 Smith Convention Network by 1 September 1999, following which it will
be refereed.  Programme Committee will then advise you of any revisions
required.

 . All presenting speakers must register for the Conference.

 . Abstracts for more than one paper may be submitted.

 . The deadline for abstract submission is 28 April, 1999.
