Redesigning Library Operations: Workshop: Streamlining procedures to
Eliminate unnecessary work.
May 9-11, 1999
Holiday InnQNorth Campus
Ann Arbor, Michigan
Library operations consist of a labyrinth of often-complicated procedures
and processes. New integrated library systems (ILS) require that existing
procedures be revamped and jobs be redesigned.
The use of Web-based resources and outsourcing of functions also requires
libraries to rethink how work is done.
Change, change and more change, has only heightened staff stress. The
Merck Corp., the large pharmaceutical firm, has found that involving staff
in helping to eliminate unnecessary operations not only increases
productivity but also lowers stress in the workplace.
Procedures associated with any of the following activities involve
procedures should be candidates for analysis and redesign.
% Reference services
% Document delivery
% ILB/ILL
% Acquisitions of monographs and serials
% Bookkeeping
% Circulation
% Licensing
% Digital scanning and preservation
% Cataloging
% Copy cataloging
WHAT PARTICIPANTS WILL LEARN
& Tools for diagnosing problem areas
% Analytical tools used to study many types of workflow and procedures
% Techniques for gaining staff buy-in for planned change
% How to organize initiatives to analyze library procedures

WORKSHOP DESIGN

that can be used back home. Programs are structured so that participants
have ample opportunities to draw on the energy, excitement and rich
variety of experiences others bring to an event. Participants can expect
a variety of relevant topics to be addressed during the workshop. The
workshop is designed so that group activities are interspersed with short
presentations.
WORKSHOP HANDBOOK
To enable participants to focus on learning rather than taking notes, a
post-workshop handbook that includes an overview and summary of the
processes used, and compilations of the data generated will be distributed
following the workshop.
