Cataloging and Authorities Team
POSITION: Catalog Librarian
DESCRIPTION: The librarian in this position is responsible for
original and complex copy cataloging of materials in a variety of
subjects and formats, with an emphasis on Spanish language materials.
The position involves technical services support of the Latin American
Studies program and participation in the Cataloging and Authorities
team management process in a customer oriented environment.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited institution;
solid reading knowledge of Spanish; knowledge of AACR2, LCSH, LC
classification and USMARC formats; strong communication and
interpersonal skills; a positive and cooperative attitude; and the
ability to manage and embrace change in the workplace. Preferred:
Cataloging experience, preferably in an academic environment, and
experience using a major bibliographic utility. Desired: Experience
using an integrated local system; familiarity with language(s) in
addition to Spanish; knowledge/experience in cataloging electronic
resources; and familiarity with national cooperative cataloging
efforts, such as NACO.
ENVIRONMENT: Vanderbilt University consists of ten schools and
colleges with an enrollment of over 10,000. The university is served
by The Jean and Alexander Heard Library, which has a collection of
over two million volumes and a staff of 220. The library is highly
automated with an online system based on Sirsi software and is a
member of Solinet. Resource Services is the centralized technical
processing and automation unit of the library system. The Cataloging
and Authorities Team participates in national cooperative cataloging
efforts including PCC and OCLC Enhance programs. Vanderbilt is
located in Nashville, Tennessee, a major business and educational
center in the mid-South with a population of over one million in the
metropolitan statistical area.
COMPENSATION: Salary negotiable. Insured benefits are those
