Periodical Database Teleconference:
A Series for Library Professionals from the College of DuPage and the
Texas State Library and Archives Commission
Friday, Feb. 26, 1999
11:00 - 1:00pm, Central Time
This is an important opportunity for all types of libraries: public,
academic, school or special libraries. They can add significantly to
their management and acquisition skills of electronic databases.
Meet with four of the major periodical database suppliers:
1. Gale Group (formerly Information Access Company)
2. H.W. Wilson Company
3. OCLC
4. University Microfilms Inc. (UMI)
You know these four companies. Whenever libraries discuss periodical
database products, these vendors' products are invariably part of the
conversation.
TOPICS
All libraries, experienced or new to electronic databases, will find
this valuable. With the four vendors in the same forum, you will have a
unique chance to add nuances to what you already know. For those
inexperienced in electronic databases, the comprehensive view is very
useful. The vendors have been asked to respond to the following specific
topics:
* Search engines
* Areas of coverage
* Costs
* Title selection
* Connections to other software
* Archival issues
* Full-text/full-image options
YOU ASK THE QUESTIONS
Best of all, you provide the questions. Register - then call, e-mail,
write or fax us your questions. We will build them into the program. We
will add them to the format or the panel of professional librarians or
our media host will deliver them. Of course, you can still call, e-mail
or fax your questions during the broadcast. Afterward, our Web site will
offer a continuing forum that your colleagues and these vendors will
access.
A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY
This opportunity is unique because four of the major companies in the
industry will be available at the same time. You can help to establish a
dialogue. You can give important input before, during and after the
teleconference on what you need, how it should work and the best ways to
integrate these database resources into your library. This is a two-way
forum - the panel format is essential to having your voice heard and
your needs met.
PROGRAM
The final outline awaits your response, but the show will consist of
short presentations by the Gale Group (formerly Information Access/IAC),
H.W. Wilson, OCLC and University Microfilms Inc. (UMI) followed by
discussion and questions. All the elements are there - four major
vendors, a panel of working library professionals, your questions or
concerns and the dynamics of live television. It will be informative -
it may even be fun.
