*******Program Announcement #2 and Application*********

      K - 1 2 N E T W O R K S C H O L A R S

A part of the New Connections Program
"BRIDGING THE GAP" Between K-12 and College

As part of its effort to support K-12 activities over the NYSERNet
Network, NYSERNet (the New York State Education and Research
Network) is pleased to announce K-12 NETWORK SCHOLARS, a
scholarship program which represents a new aspect of
NYSERNet's New Connections Program, to support individual
contributions to the expansion of meaningful network access.
NYSERNet will award five-$500 summer scholarships, and
network access accounts to K-12 Teachers and K-12 Librarians
who propose the most innovative ideas for using the NYSERNet
high-speed data network to support instruction and information
access projects, and who outline a reasonable strategy for work to
be done over the summer scholarship period to bring their
project to fruition.

All types of project ideas are solicited, however, K-12 Network
Scholars applicants are encouraged to propose ideas that, when
implemented, will "bridge" an existing programmatic gap
between their school and other schools or between schools and
post-secondary institutions. Upon completion of the scholarship
period, Scholars will prepare reports which will be widely
distributed to the education community.

The K-12 Network Scholars Program dovetails with NYSERNet's
New Connections Program, which is part of an on-going effort to
expand network access within New York State by supporting new
institutions and their users during their initial year of
connectivity. The current phase of the New Connections program
is offered under the auspices of NYSERNet's Bridging the Gap
Project, a multi-faceted program whose goal is to help "bridge the
gap" between the K-12 and post-secondary education sectors.
New Connections Phase III accordingly targets New York State
K-12 Schools having or contemplating a project that would be
enhanced through computer networking with a post-secondary
institution.

Funding for the K-12 Network Scholars program comes from
revenues gained through the sale of the "Beyond the Walls -
the World of Networked Information" Instructional Workshop
Package.

Deadline for Applications: June 1, 1992
Scholarship Winners Announcement: June 15, 1992
Scholarships Awarded: July 1, 1992
Report due to NYSERNet: August 31, 1992

Eligibility:

New York State school (public and private) teachers and school
librarians are eligible to apply. Employment at or affiliation with
a NYSERNet-connected institution is not a prerequisite.

Awards:

NYSERNet will award a $500 summer scholarship/stipend to each
of five finalists. K-12 Network Scholars will also be awarded a
NYSERNet Global Dialup ServiceSM (terminal access) account and
a user account on NYSERNet's network-connected server,
nysernet.org. These accounts will be provided at no charge
for one year.

The Proposal:

Each proposal should include the following components, and
should not exceed three typed pages:

1. The Project:

a) Proposals must describe a project that the Scholar will work
on or develop over the summer to be implemented in the school
or classroom during the 1992-1993 school year. Expectations of
the Scholar about when the project will be implemented and who
it will impact (and how many other teachers or students), should
also be described.

b) Proposals should address how project results will be assessed
and reported to NYSERNet. Project results that involve
"networkable" products (such as on-line documents, conferences,
databases, etc.) should be described. Agreements with network-
connected organizations to host those products should be
described and supported (with appended letters of support).

2. Teacher and Student Access to the Project:

Provide a description of the expected computing and networking
environment at the site of the implemented project, and its
availability to project participants. Of particular interest are
projects that offer as much physical access to the network as
possible for the project participants.

Applications should be submitted to:
