Let me ask an eminently practical question concerning WINDO. Exactly
who is supposed to be gaining access to these services. That is,
what is meant by the Depository Libraries. Do we mean one account
per depository library, one account per building where depository
materials are held, as many accounts as the library has terminals,
as many accounts as the library wants. This will drastically impact
upon the cost factors cited previously. And it will also impact
upon how important these services ultimately are to libraries.
It is one thing to say that my institution will be allowed to search
Medline free of charge from one device in the government documents
department. It's quite another matter to allow all of the faculty,
students, and staff in our medical school to search Medline free of
charge or at incremental cost.
