A Z39.50 Integrated Library System Profile
The vCuc pilot project conducted by the National Library of Canada,
and similar projects in the U.S. and Europe have identified a number
of problems when using Z39.50 to simultaneously search several
catalogues within a virtual catalogue. There is wide variation in how
implementors have interpreted some aspects of the standard or
they have implemented different options within the standard.
These differences become apparent to users when one search
against multiple servers produces variable and misleading search results.
The development and implementation of a profile, which defines a
common set of Z39.50 features and how they are implemented,
will reduce these problems for searchers. A document describing the
issues and how adoption of a common profile will help to resolve
the problems can be found at:

A discussion list is being used to gather input into the development
of the profile.

Un profil de systeme bibliothecaire integre Z39.50
Le projet-pilote de la vvCcc mene par la Bibliotheque nationale
du Canada et des projets similaires menes aux Etats-Unis et
en Europe nous ont permis d identifier un certain nombre de
problemes lors de l utilisation du Z39.50 afin d effectuer simultanement
une recherche a l interieur de plusieurs catalogues d un meme
catalogue virtuel. Il existe toute une gamme de variations sur la
maniere dont les ingenieurs de mise en application du projet ont
interprete certains aspects de la norme ou ont mis en place differentes
options a l interieur meme de la norme. Ces differences deviennent
apparentes pour les utilisateurs lorsqu une recherche effectuee sur
plusieurs serveurs produit des resultats de recherche variables et
trompeurs.
L elaboration et la mise en place d un profil qui definit un ensemble
de caracteristiques du Z39.50 et la maniere dont elles sont mises
en place, reduira ces problemes pour les chercheurs. Un document
decrivant les problemes relatifs au Z39.50 et la maniere dont l adoption
d un profil commun contribuera a leur resolution peut etre consulte
