POSITION: Applications Analyst (Position Number: 51729)
(NOTIS Library Management System Programmer)
DESCRIPTION:
Under the supervision of the Head of Library Automation Services, serves
as principal programmer for Ameritech NOTIS Library Management Systems
(Tech I).
Manages NOTIS Library Management System: Plans, manages, and develops
technical aspects of system in IBM OS/390 (MVS) using CICS. Responsible
for daily operations of NOTIS and other related systems, performing
systems analysis and local programming. Loads and manages databases.
Communicates with Ameritech and computing staff elsewhere within
University on all technical aspects of operation of system, including
system performance, debugging problems, supporting and monitoring
applications, testing new modules and enhancements, and installation of
new releases. Maintains VSAM files and monitors disk usage. Acts as
security officer for library staff security using ACF2 software and
NOTIS systems security features. Assists in specifying hardware to
ensure system compatibility and performs some hardware installation and
maintenance in conjunction with other staff in the library.
System Planning: Assists Head of Library Automation, and cooperates with
the other staff in the department and University Computing Center, to
plan for and design integration of client/server systems with NOTIS
mainframe environment. Recommends policy and procedures in affected
systems as appropriate.
System Documentation: Prepares system and user documentation as required
for efficient operation of system. Generates and prints reports using
standard report writer and custom SAS programming. Ensures that all
system documentation, especially local settings and program coding, are
maintained.
Customer Service: Maintains good public relations, is cooperative, and
provides quality customer service user support.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced knowledge of TSO, SPF, ACF2, JCL, SAS, S/390
Assembler, CICS command level in an IBM MVS mainframe environment.
Familiarity with VTAM and TCP/IP networks, as well as UNIX (preferably
AIX in RS/6000). TSO Clist and Rexx desirable. Demonstrated ability to
write, maintain, and document code. Good oral communication skills with
a strong service attitude, good analytical skill, attention to detail and
organizational abilities, ability to work independently and as part of a
team, ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities under
pressure. Prefer experience in library automation, including work with
MARC records, a major integrated library system, and ANSI Z39.50. Also
preferred is a BA in information systems, computer science, or a related
discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
ENVIRONMENT: Virginia Commonwealth University (http://www.vcu.edu) is a
publicly-supported urban, research university in Richmond, Virginia. It
serves 22,000 students on both the Academic Campus and at the Medical
College of Virginia. The library has over 1.2 million volumes. Systems in
operation: NOTIS in OS/390 MVS mainframe environment (including MDAS,
InfoShare, WebPAC, QuickReports, RSS, Unix GTO), 4 AIX (RS/6000) and 3 NT
servers, Novell Netware LAN, CD LAN, OCLC, and over 350 microcomputers.

access databases and the library is an active participant in VIVA's
statewide networking consortium for shared access to electronic resources
(VIVA). The library is participating in the University's implementation

management and distribution of electronic text and other electronic
objects.
SALARY: This is a state-classified position with three Competancy Levels:
Level 1 $27,000-53,700
Level 2 $31,700-75,200
Level 3 $44,400-77,500
Hiring is expected to be in the mid-range of Level 1 or 2 ($35,000-
40,000), depending upon qualificaitons. Benefits include 7 days leave
initially, with up to 21 days for continued service; choice of health
plans (including HMOs and dental plans), choice of retirement and
annuity plans (including TIAA/CREF); remuneration for University course
work; and paid life insurance.

Reference/Electronic Services Librarian
University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the
position of Reference/Electronic Services Librarian. This position is
a tenure track faculty position, which reports to the Head of the
Reference and Research Services Department.
ENVIRONMENT: This new tenure track faculty position reflects the
Libraries' and the University's commitment to information technology
as well as public service. UC, located in one of America's "most
liveable cities", is one of Ohio's major research institutions and is a
leader in the nationally recognized OhioLINK library consortium.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Responsible for the continuing development and
coordination of electronic resources of the Reference and Research
Services Department; provides advice and consultation to the
Information Services Division as appropriate in the development of and
continued transformation to electronic formats. Provides general
reference and research assistance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working with the Library Systems Support Unit and other designated
team members, coordinates the technical configuration of the
reference electronic resources. Coordinates the installation, daily
maintenance, and proper functioning of reference hardware, software, and
handles related technical issues.
Assists users in accessing library resources with their own
equipment working with the Library Systems Support Unit and other
designated team members.
Creates, edits and updates the Reference and Research Services
Department's Web Pages providing dynamic, current information and
access to the Libraries' services and collections. Coordinates
with other units as appropriate. Advises in the development of and

and services.
Coordinates the development, creation, and maintenance of user
guides/manuals for reference electronic resources to assist users
where needed. Publicizes and maintains the collection of
guides/manuals to electronic resources.
Coordinates staff training in new or changed electronic products
for reference.
Provides general reference assistance in the Reference
Consultation Office. Some evening and/or weekend hours may be required.
Participates in general planning and policy making for the
Reference and Research Services Department and the Information
Services Division as appropriate.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters degree in library science from an ALA accredited program.
Commitment to user-centered service, experience in reference, and
experience with electronic library resources.
Familiarity with traditional as well as electronic reference
sources.
Demonstrated competency with microcomputers and CD-ROM
applications and substantial knowledge of the internet and World
Wide Web.
Demonstrated ability in web page design, construction and
maintenance.
Demonstrated ability to provide individual and group instruction
on technical topics.
Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills to work

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

COORDINATOR OF WEB AND INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYSTEM SERVICES
Responsibilities: Coordinates the ongoing development and maintenance of
the University of Houston Libraries' Internet and Intranet Web services.
Oversees the operations of the Innovative Interfaces INNOPAC integrated
library system. Reports to the Head of Systems.
