POSITION OPENING =96 TECHNICAL SERVICES MANAGER, LIBRARY & ARCHIVES,
AMERICAN BIBLE SOCIETY, NEW YORK, NY
The Library & Archives at the American Bible Society, an
interdenominational publishing organization, seeks a Technical Servic=
es
Manager to join a team committed to bringing our collections to the
widest possible audience through expanded electronic access.
Headquartered in New York since its founding in 1816, the American Bi=
ble
Society has worked to provide Scriptures to all in a language they ca=
n
understand and at a price they can afford. With a collection of 53,00=
0
Scriptures in over 2,000 languages, the Library supports the current
programs of the Society and serves all interested in the history of t=
he
Bible, its translation, publication, and worldwide distribution. The
Library & Archives is also developing a web presence, including an
electronic catalogue and finding aids.
As the department prepares for retrospective conversion of its
cataloging and finding aids and the move to an on-line catalog, the
Technical Services Manager will play a central role in making the
collections accessible in the electronic age.
Primary responsibilities will include development, implementation, an=
d
improvement of technical and automated services of the Library and
Archives, as well as supervising, training, and evaluating 1.5 FTE
catalogers and a part-time acquisitions assistant. This position
reports to the Director, Library & Archives.
Responsibilities include:
- Coordinates the selection, implementation and ongoing maintenance =
of
a comprehensive Library & Archives-based electronic collection
management system.
- Oversees the creation and maintenance of a citation level, union
bibliographic database, following MARC, SGML and other appropriate
standards, encompassing materials in the Library & Archives collectio=
ns.
- Oversees a bibliographic retrospective conversion program for the
Library & Archives collections.
- Coordinates the decision-making involved and oversees the processe=
s
for sustaining the ongoing digitization of indexes and content in the
Library & Archives collections.
- Coordinates the Library & Archives' networking environment and wor=
ks
with the Information Technology Services Department to ensure optimal
performance and functionality
- Coordinates and supervises all operations and processes pertaining=
to
the ordering, receiving, cataloging, physical processing and maintena=
nce
of all Scripture, reference and rare book resources, and
collection-level archival records.
- Coordinates the job responsibilities of technical staff, including,
but not limited to, objectives, work assignments, leave time,
expectations, priorities and deadlines.
- Coordinates and facilitates staff training for use of library and
archival systems.
- Develops and maintains technical and automated services policies a=
nd
procedures in consultation with the Director.
- Contributes to the mission and goals of Library & Archives in
planning and policy formulation.
- Works in cooperation with the Director in the recruitment, hiring =
and
performance evaluation of technical staff.
- Coordinates initiatives to enhance community-wide access to
electronic information resources available both inside and outside
Library & Archives.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree from an ALA-accredited institution;
- Broad experience in a wide variety of processing and service roles=
,
especially in a research library, archival or museum setting;
- Comprehensive knowledge of library technical and automated service=
s
operations;
- Knowledge of and experience with the USMARC format for bibliograph=
ic,
holdings, and authority data;
- Significant experience in using RLIN, OCLC, or other bibliographic
utility;
- Experience in training or teaching staff and end-users in the
operation of electronic systems;
- Flexibility, excellent oral and written communications,
interpersonal, and organizational skills, able to work as part of a
team;
- Commitment to innovative approaches that improve the operations an=

services of
libraries.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF LIBRARY VACANCY
TITLE: Slavic, East European and Central Asian Bibliographer, Librarian
I or II (PRO 122)
DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Associate Director for Collections
Management, develops and maintains research collection in assigned
areas, especially Slavic and East European Studies including the
territories of the former Soviet Union. Duties include: selection of
materials, management of the collection, promotion of the collection,
faculty liaison, library instruction, public service and outreach, and
participation in cooperative collection development agreements. A
significant part of the assignment will include specialized and general
reference service, including nights and weekends; or original cataloging
of Slavic, East European, Central Asian and general materials.
QUALIFICATIONS: Librarian I: Required: ALA-accredited MLS; familiarity
with electronic reference tools, including Internet resources; excellent
oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with
faculty, students and staff; preparation and commitment to conduct
independent scholarship consistent with a librarian appointment;
capacity and commitment to engage independently in continuing
professional development; ability to work in a dynamic and changing
environment.
Desired: Expertise in Slavic languages; undergraduate concentration in
Slavic studies.
Librarian II: Same as above plus 3 years of successful professional
library experience.
CAMPUS AND LIBRARIES: Michigan State University Libraries serve more
than 2,000 faculty, 33,000 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate and
professional students on a park-like campus of over 5,000 acres. The
Main Library and 14 branch libraries have combined holdings of over 4
million volumes. East Lansing is a community of approximately 50,000
located adjacent to Lansing, the state capital.
COMPENSATION: $33,000 minimum. MSU provides generous fringe benefits.

TITLE: Systems Librarian, Librarian I (PRO 111)
DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Manager of the Web and Electronic
Resources Unit, and in coordination with all Reference Units, the
Systems Librarian will have responsibility for supporting, designing and
organizing the Electronic Public Access Facilities in the Main Library
and in several branches. Primary responsibilities will include
supporting and improving a large number of stand alone and networked
workstations, including responding promptly to the requests of reference
librarians and coordinating instruction efforts for new electronic
resources and equipment; participation in research and evaluation of new
server and workstation technologies to determine their appropriate
placement and best use in the networked environment; participation in
the development, deployment and support of new interactive reference
referral technologies; providing technological assistance and primary
support for special computing projects; providing consultation and
support for Library programs such as outreach and digitization. May
participate in library instruction and reference activities.
