Technical Services Librarian
Harvard Theatre Collection
Harvard University
Reports directly to and works closely with the Curator of the Harvard
Theatre Collection, which is a department of the Houghton Library, the
rare book and manuscript library of the Harvard College Library.
Responsible for original cataloguing and processing of manuscripts,
archival collections, visual materials, music, and rare books.
Responsibilities include preparation for conservation, binding, boxing,
shipping to Harvard Depository; classification, organization of
collection, rehousing, labeling and identification, end processing;
compiling some finding aids and collection documentation. Other
responsibilities as assigned or delegated by the Curator, including
occasional coverage of responsibilities of other departmental staff
members during absences, some public services work, assisting with
supervision of the Reading Room on a scheduled basis, answering research
inquiries, and work in exhibitions, publications and other public
programs.
Daily contact with all departmental staff and Houghton Library staff;
some contact with researchers and donors. May involve some supervision
of student and/or hourly staff.
Qualifications:
ALA accredited library degree; MARC cataloguing skills and experience;
archival cataloguing and processing experience required. Subject area
experience; conservation and exhibition preparation skills; working
knowledge of Italian, French, or German language; computer skills (word
processing, database management, HTML and SGML coding, on-line
cataloguing); supervisory and project management experience; experience
in handling valuable and rare collection material is desired. The
successful applicant will be energetic, methodical, self-motivated,
adaptable, possessing excellent interpersonal skills. We seek
individuals who can prioritize among several concurrent projects and
work effectively individually and as a member of a team, both on
short-and long-term projects.
Compensation: Anticipated hiring salary, mid 30s. Major benefits include

Harvard University Depository Push Project
Harvard College Library, Cataloging Services Department, has a full-time
position available working on the Harvard Depository Push Project.
Reporting to Serials Cataloging Team Leader, catalogs or performs
bibliographic maintenance for paper serial publications in many languages.
Responsibilities include serials cataloging and associated authority and
holdings work to local and/or national standards using AACR2, the old
Widener Classification System or LCCS, LCSH, and the USMARC Formats.
Performs original and copy cataloging or enhances provisional records for
material being processed for remote storage/retrieval. Contributes to
project effort by accomplishing related duties as required.
This is a two-year temporary position from October 1, 1998 - September
30, 2000.
REQUIREMENTS: MLS from ALA-accredited library school or equivalent;
strong reading knowledge of Western European languages; excellent
verbal/written English language skills; two+ years cataloging and OCLC
experience. Thorough knowledge of cataloging
tools/standards/conventions; open-minded, flexible attitude and ability
to work with others to promote effective collaborative and collegial
environment; excellent organizational/interpersonal skills; and ability
to attend to detail.
