INFORMATION ARCHITECT
The Connecticut State Library is seeking a highly energetic, technically
knowledgeable individual with superb interpersonal skills who will work
with us to develop the current statewide bibliographic database ("reQuest")
into a one-stop, Web-accessible resource that is a window to the holdings
of every library in Connecticut. You will work and learn in an environment
that encourages innovation, creative thinking, and cross-disciplinary
research. This is a high priority, high visibility project of the
Connecticut Library Network (http://www.cslnet.ctstateu.edu/cln) serving
every citizen of the state.
The Information Architect will promote the awareness and use of the service
throughout the state; ensure the integrity and quality control of the
database; ensure compliance with contractual requirements; plan and
coordinate the migration of the database from a centralized to a
distributed resource; plan and coordinate training of library staff;
perform ongoing systems administration/network support duties; plus other
duties as required. Travel required.
Qualifications: A Masters Degree in Library Science or Information Science
from an ALA-accredited library school, or a Masters Degree in a field
closely related to information technology and three (3) years post-graduate
professional employment in a library systems environment.
Salary: Starting salary $49,382 with annual increases to $59,868 plus
fringe benefit package.

Library Technology Team
POSITION: Systems Librarian/Computer Professional
DESCRIPTION: The Systems Librarian/Computer Professional provides
programming and technology support for the Vanderbilt libraries as a
member of the Library Technology Team. The Library currently operates
an automated library system from SIRSI Corporation and is working on
developing OCLC's SiteSearch software as a unifying interface to many
information resources provided by the Library, including SIRSI,
SilverPlatter's ERL server, local SiteSearch databases and image
files, and FirstSearch; a couple of cooperative projects with other
libraries are underway which involve virtual catalog implementations
of the SiteSearch software. The Web is the user interface for all
services. The primary function of this position is to provide
programming support for the major applications underlying the
library's Web environment. The position works closely with the other
systems staff and reports to the Library Technology Team Leader.
QUALIFICATIONS: This position is classified as either a librarian or
as a technical/computer professional. For appointment as a librarian,
an MLS from an accredited ALA institution is required. For
appointment as a technical/computer professional a bachelor's degree
in a computer related field is required and library automation
experience is highly desired. Experience with UNIX, client-server
technology, and Web applications is required; java application
development experience is desired; technical understanding of Z39.50
and previous OCLC SiteSearch are highly desirable. The successful
candidate will demonstrate the ability to work effectively under
pressure and deadlines and will possess strong communication skills,
flexibility, and eagerness to work in a team/cooperative environment.
A user-service philosophy and the ability to work with non-technical
library staff are important requirements for the position.
ENVIRONMENT: Vanderbilt University consists of ten schools and
colleges with an enrollment of over 10,000. The university is served
by the Jean and Alexander Heard Library which has ten library
operations, a collection of 2.3 million volumes and a staff of 220.
Vanderbilt is a member of the Association for Research Libraries and
SOLINET. The library is highly automated with Novell networks in all
of the library facilities and a variety of CD-ROM and database
services in addition to its automated library system (SIRSI), ERL
server and OCLC SiteSearch applications. The Library Technology Team,
which serves the whole library system, consists of ten staff--three
librarians (including this position), three professional technical
staff, and four technical support staff. More information about the
