ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES


Background:

The University of Chicago Library is a member of the Association of Research
Libraries and a member of state and regional consortia.  It has an annual
budget of over $20,000,000, and 252 FTE professional and support staff=
 working
in eight facilities.  The Library holds a collection in excess of 6,000,000
volumes, 36,900 serial titles, and over 2,000,000 microforms.  The Library=
 has
a strong commitment to the provision of networked electronic resources.  The
Library serves a student body of over 12,000, including 3,500 undergraduates
and students in 70 doctoral fields, as well as 1,186 faculty members.

General Statement of Responsibilities:

Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Assistant
Director
for Administrative Services for the University of Chicago Library.  This
position provides leadership and direction for an array of financial,
personnel
and facilities functions carried out by staff of the Administrative Services
Division (~20 FTE).  The Assistant Director for Administrative Services has
primary responsibility for budgets and internal financial systems, contract
and
grant administration, personnel policy and procedures, and facilities
management.  The Assistant Director reports to the Director of the Library.

Specific Responsibilities:

=B7 Participates in the general management of the Library.
=B7 Manages all aspects of the Library's Administrative Services Division.
=B7 Plans and implements the ongoing development of automated systems within=
 the
Library for fiscal, payroll, and personnel records and reporting integrated
with the University environment.
=B7 Directs the Project Manager, Regenstein Library Reconfiguration, who is=
 also
responsible for Building Services (all buildings), Shipping and Receiving,=
 the
Messenger Service, administrative activities related to purchasing,=
 supplies,
publication, forms and oversight of performance factors relating to the
photocopy contract.
=B7 Directs the Administrative Manager, who is responsible for Budget and=
 for
Library Personnel, including recruitment, compensation, payroll, employee=
 and
labor relations, staff development, training and personnel planning=
 functions.
=B7 With the Director, represents the Library within the University  in the
areas
of budget and administrative activities.
=B7 Serves as the Library representative to University committees planning=
 and
developing automation of administrative systems.
=B7 When appropriate, represents the Library and the University in
communications
with external funding sources and external cooperative programs.

Qualifications:

Candidates for the position of Assistant Director for Administrative=
 Services
must have a graduate degree from an ALA accredited program, or another
appropriate professional or graduate degree.  A graduate library degree plus=
 a
business or accounting degree are preferred.  Candidates must demonstrate
successful, relevant experience in an academic or comparable environment,
including evidence of significant, progressive administrative=
 responsibility.=20
Candidates must demonstrate superior management and planning skills. =20

Candidates must possess superior supervisory, oral, written and=
 interpersonal
skills.  Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators and
supervisors both within the Library and the University is required.
Experience
with contract and grant administration is preferred.  An understanding of
higher education and a background of commitment to academic libraries is
strongly preferred.

Salary and Benefits:

Appointment salary will be dependent on qualifications and experience, as=
 well
as type of appointment.  Benefits include a retirement plan, health and life
insurance, paid time off including vacation, University holidays, personal
holidays, sick leave and tuition benefit plans.
