Our Systems staff tell us that no more CD-ROM drives are being made

If any participant on this list has knowledge of any such product
still being marketed, I would be most grateful. At present this
problem is rendering our holdings of BPO completely unusable.

I wonder:
1) Why couldn't you remove the disc from the caddy for use in the new drive;
unless the discs are being inserted by patrons on demand, which would be
confusing to them.
2) Perhaps a dealer in _used_ equipment might be able to supply a few
caddy-type drives for replacement, including several for backup/future use.
Try the back pages of _Computer_Shopper_ or _Nuts_and_Volts_ magazines for
sources of used equipment.
Good Luck

Taking them out of the caddies & sticking them in the tray may work in a
situation where only library staff will be using the disks. It's the last
thing you want students or library patrons doing when you're dealing with a
product that may have hundreds of caddies, like ProQuest's General
Periodicals OnDisc or Business Periodicals OnDisc.
Believe I recommended checking with Toshiba. University Microfilms, which
produces ProQuest, could probably also supply such a drive -- their products
make heavy use of such drives.
