POSITION AVAILABLE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS EARL K. LONG LIBRARY .
Position: User Education Librarian (Search Extended)
Available: Immediately
Responsibilities: The User Education Librarian is responsible for the vision
and leadership of the library user education program. This position
develops, promotes, and guides implementation of a coordinated plan for
university and community library literacy; coordinates and organizes all
library user education activities including distance education; evaluates and
assesses user education activities and recommends changes as needed; gathers,
assimilates and disseminates statistics on user education activity;
participates in providing user education; provides support for subject
reference/bibliographers who provide upper-level instruction; promotes
library services to the campus and acts as liaison to the community; provides
reference services from a general reference desk. Works cooperatively with
other library and university faculty and staff; reports to the Dean of
Library Services.
Qualifications: Required: MLS from an accredited ALA program; extensive
professional experience in library user education in an academic library;
demonstrated knowledge and experience with electronic and web-based resources
and multimedia technologies; recent reference experience in an academic
library; ability to work productively with diverse groups in an urban
academic setting; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing,
in English. Preferred: Experience with teaching, instructional design, and
assessment techniques, particularly in library user education; knowledge of,
and skill with, instructional technology and software; HTML or web development
experience; previous experience in teaching a library skills credit course;
successful grant-writing experience.
Salary & Rank: $38,000 - $40,000 at the Assistant or Associate Librarian rank,
depending on qualifications and experience. Librarians at the University of
New Orleans are tenurable academic appointees enjoying full faculty status and
responsibilities, including teaching, research, and service.
Fringe Benefits: Liberal vacation, sick leave, and holidays. Optional group
medical, life insurance, and health maintenance plans are available.

Position: Engineering Reference Librarian

Duties:Works with a team of Reference Services Department faculty members to
provide general
reference assistance from a central reference desk, including some evening and
weekend duty.
Provides specialized reference services for the engineering and science faculty
and students.
Serves as bibliographer for the disciplines of Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical
Engineering,
Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering, and other related disciplines; and
works
collaboratively with the faculty of the College of Engineering to develop the
library
collection. Actively provides library user education and conducts online
searching when
needed. Reports to Chair of Reference Services.
Qualifications: Required: ALA accredited MLS; academic course work or degree in
a science or
technology discipline; proficiency in online searching and developing web-based
resources;
working knowledge of electronic reference source such as CD-ROM, Internet, OCLC,
etc; ability
to work productively with diverse groups in an urban academic setting; ability
to communicate
effectively, orally and in writing, in English. Preferred: Experience in
science/technology
reference and collection development, preferably in an academic library;
previous experience
in library user education.

Summary:
As a member of the Research Library, provide technology development and
support for the Research Library and its customers. The Research Library
works in an integrated team environment. Services include development,
management and operation of the Library's Geac Advance and classified
Advance automated systems. Geac Advance is a proprietary system based on
the UNIX platform. Provide technical support for loading external databases
on the two Advance systems as well as supporting connections between the
Library databases and the external customers who desire access to them.
Assist in providing Web access to the Library databases. Work with process
team members to design, develop and support search engines for full text
and/or relational databases based on interpreting and implementing
customers' information needs into database features. Consult with Research
Library and Library Without Walls staff to identify and provide access to
cutting-edge and future technology. Document processes involved in
implementing database activities. Actively understand, assess, and provide
for customer needs for electronic databases and products. Participate in
customer training and marketing for Research Library electronic databases
and products.
Required Skills:
* Library database management and system administrator experience
supporting UNIX systems.
* Demonstrated experience actively working with customers using electronic
databases and products.
* Demonstrated experience developing and supporting retrieval tools for
