To anybody with any advice.....
HI! My name is Ruth Jarvis and I have just taken over the management and
integration of two relatively small collections for a new organisation in the
meat industry. I am a one-person librarian with limited experience, and although
the efforts of my predecessor were great indeed, the library is in some state of
disarray. So I am basically rebuilding the library from the ground up to suit
the information needs of the new organisation. The collection has about 2500
articles, including around 500 journal titles (I think?), books, pamplets,
reports, videos etc. The functions which will be important are of course having
a record or catalog of the collection, circulation of journals, recording
inter-library loans, recording information requests, tracking subscriptions,
book orders etc.
One of the problems I am facing is the upgrading of the library management
system. Currently, we are still operating (sort of) using the DOS version of
Inmagic, which is somewhat limited. We have of course looked into upgrading to
DBTextware and have reviewed it's capabilities but I would like to look at a few
more options to make sure I am making the right decision. So, I am wondering if
anyone can help with the following:
1. If anyone is currently using Trimagic's DBTextware and has any comments about
it's usefulness in a small library environment?
2. If anyone knows about, has used or designed a library database using
Microsoft Access?
3. If there are any other software packages for libraries that you can
recommend?
With grateful thanks
Ruth Jarvis
