The University of Tennessee, Knoxville Libraries seeks a creative and
dynamic librarian to lead Reference & Instructional Services in a
centralized main library serving an academic community with expectations
for excellence in scholarly resources and services.  Helps shape and guide
pro-active reference and research services in a rapidly changing
environment.  Serves as a member of the Libraries Management Group and
collaborates with colleagues in library-wide planning, budgeting, and
policy development.  Advises and reports to the Dean of Libraries.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leads a team of 21 librarians, most of whom also have collection
development responsibilities, and 20 staff.  Has administrative
responsibility for Reference and Instructional Services including Distance
Education, Government Documents and Microforms, Interlibrary Services,
Electronic Services, and Audiovisual Services.  Works closely with 8
reference coordinators to plan, implement and evaluate reference and
research services.  Subject coordinators (Humanities, Science and
Technology, Social Sciences) and the Electronic Services Coordinator are
also a part of the Collection Development & Management team and report
formally to heads of both teams.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:  ALA-accredited MLS degree.  A proven leadership record with
substantial professional experience in an academic or research library
including several years' supervisory responsibility for faculty and staff.
Extensive knowledge of reference sources, practices, and procedures and
evidence of success in introducing new services.  Understanding of
scholarly communication patterns and needs of a scholarly clientele.
Desire to play a visible role in the academic community.  Extensive
knowledge of new technologies and their applications in enhancing user
services.  Strong commitment to providing quality service; ability to work
flexibly and creatively in a demanding and rapidly changing environment;
excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Established record of professional involvement and scholarly activity.
Preferred:  At least five years' experience as a reference librarian.
Collection development management experience in an academic setting.

BENEFITS:  Librarians at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville have
faculty rank and status and are appointed for twelve months.  This is a
tenure track appointment.  Library faculty must meet University
requirements for promotion and tenure.  Annual leave is accrued at the
rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per
month.  Faculty have their choice of a state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF.
Non-refundable contributions to either retirement plan are paid for the
employee by the University.  Group health and life insurance plans are
available.  Tuition remission is available for all university employees;
partial undergraduate tuition remission is available
to dependent children and spouses of UT employees.

ENVIRONMENT:  The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a Carnegie Research
Level One institution, enrolls approximately 26,000 students from every
state in the United States and approximately 100 other countries.  As
Tennessee's comprehensive campus, UTK offers more doctoral programs than
any other institution in the state, and its faculty attract nearly $80
million annually for sponsored research programs.  UTK is one of 27 higher
education institutions holding the distinction of being both a land-grant
institution and state university.

The UTK Libraries, with an annual budget of almost $10 million, holds 2
million volumes and receives approximately 14,000 current serials.  The
Libraries system includes the John C. Hodges Library and four branches on
the Knoxville campus:  Agriculture-Veterinary Medicine, Map, Music and
University Archives and Special Collections.  A fifth branch, the Social
Work Library, is located in Nashville.  Over three hundred persons are
employed, including 49 librarians, 8 exempt, 123 non-exempt, and 150
students. UTK Libraries is a member of the Association of Research
Libraries, SOLINET, and the Center for Research Libraries.  The UTK
Libraries is installing a client-server integrated system in 1997.  The
Libraries also offers a Web-based information system and access to a
variety of electronic information sources.

Reference Technology Librarian

The Richard A. Gleeson Library and Charles & Nancy Geschke Learning Resource

Center at the University of San Francisco is accepting applications for the
position of Reference Technology Librarian.  This position reports to the
Head of the Reference and Research Services Department. It requires a
proactive, self-motivated, creative librarian to maintain and operate all
electronic services and systems in the department and to provide leadership
in shaping the future direction of the department's use of rapidly changing
technology. The current system configuration includes a Windows NT LAN with
42 CD-ROM drives and remote access via Citrix WinFrame software; a UNIX
Solaris computer; 18 public PC workstations on the LAN, as well as
stand-alone PCs and Macs. Onsite support is also provided to 5 regional
campus libraries with PCs and Macs. This librarian works closely with, and
is the designated backup for, the Library Systems Manager, who maintains the

library's Innovative Interfaces integrated system. In addition, the
Reference Technology librarian also works closely with the librarian who
maintains the library web site, the Kendrick Law Librarians and the
university's Information Technology Services department. An electronic
classroom is planned for the near future. The primary responsibility of this

position is to maintain the Reference technology systems; also required is
participation in traditional Reference Desk service, including evening and
weekend service hours. This librarian may also participate in user education

programs and collection development.

This is not an entry-level position. Qualified applicants must have an
M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited program with at least 3 years of professional
library experience. Applicants must be highly service oriented to work well
with students, faculty and colleagues; must be able to handle effectively
the pressures and demands of departmental assignments and systems problems;
must possess excellent communication, leadership and interpersonal skills;
must have expertise in the use of electronic resources; must possess
aptitude to answer questions at a busy Reference Desk.  Applicants must also

have experience with microcomputer hardware and software, including Windows
95, familiarity with various internet applications and experience
maintaining a CD-ROM LAN, preferably in a Windows NT LAN environment.
Professional development activities are encouraged and supported. Librarians

are part of a collective bargaining unit. Appointment is at the Assistant or

Senior Assistant Librarian level. Salary range: $34,528-$44,933 (Note: These

are 97/98 salaries; 98/99 salaries are being negotiated through the
bargaining unit).  Salary and rank are dependent upon qualifications.

ELECTRONIC SERVICES AND WEB DEVELOPMENT LIBRARIAN

The Bowdoin College Library seeks an experienced and innovative
librarian to join an enthusiastic staff committed to integrating
technology into library services.  This 32 month, grant-funded position
reports to the Associate Librarian for Public Services. Duties include:
coordinating planning and providing technical expertise for electronic
reference services and collaboratively designed library technology
projects; overseeing  team effort to develop and maintain the Librarys
web gateway (http://www.bowdoin.edu/dept/library); overseeing and
participating in the acquisition, installation and maintenance of
hardware/software in collaboration with campus computing and library
staff; developing staff  training programs; and, as a member of the
reference team,  providing general reference services.

Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS required; one to two years experience
planning and implementing electronic reference services preferred;
demonstrated expertise in web development including knowledge of HTML,
web toolkits and UNIX, with experience in web design and JavaScript
highly desirable; knowledge of emerging trends in electronic reference
services, web development and Internet technology, imaging and
multimedia production and presentation; demonstrated supervisory,
organizational and project management experience; excellent
communications, team-building and interpersonal skills; demonstrated
ability to provide individual/group instruction and reference service
with sensitivity to differing learning styles; expertise in set-up and
troubleshooting of computer hardware and software.

Bowdoin College is a 200 year old, selective, undergraduate liberal arts
college with 1,550 students. The library collection includes over
870,000 volumes and a wide array of electronic resources. The seacoast
town of Brunswick is located 30 miles from Portland and 2 = hours from
Boston.
