NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

Associate Director for Collections & Technical Services. Head of
collections and technical services division. Provide ongoing
leadership for a strong program of collection development in the
university libraries system. Administer overall operations of
collections and technical services division staffed by 18 FTE faculty,
28 FTE staff, 3.5 FTE graduate assistants, and 3.6 FTE student
assistants; allocate divisional budgetary and personnel resources,
including the 1998-1999 libraries' materials budget of $3 million;
plan, implement, and evaluate divisional activities; insure
appropriate communication within division and outside division; serve
as liaison with the teaching faculty and staff; and represent division
within university libraries. Supervise divisional  department heads
including those of acquisitions; cataloging; electronic information
resources; rare books and special collections; science, engineering
and business; social sciences and humanities; and the southeast Asia
collection. Work directly with libraries faculty and staff outside the
division when they participate in collection development. Appointment
at level of professor or associate professor, based on experience and
qualifications. Required Qualifications: Master's degree from an
ALA-accredited library education program and second master's;
successful, progressively responsible professional experience in
academic or research library, including experience in collection
development; administrative ability, strong leadership qualities, and
communication skills to work cooperatively with all segments of the
university community. Preferred Qualifications: Doctorate degree;
record of publication and professional involvement supporting a senior
level appointment in a  tenure track; demonstrated  commitment to
affirmative action; grant proposal experience; experience with
technology applications in collection development, acquisitions, or
serials. Salary: $57,500 minimum for twelve-month appointment. Submit

                Systems Librarian Position Announcement

Overview:

Carleton College seeks a technically capable, service-oriented librarian
to coordinate management of all library computer resources, including the
integrated automation system, networked microcomputers and peripherals,
and Internet-accessible services.  The systems librarian serves a key
role in ensuring that these resources are highly accessible, functional,
and reliable.  He or she also maintains continuing expertise in computing
technologies used to support library activities.

This position is a 12-month annual staff appointment reporting to the
College Librarian.

The successful candidate will join a talented, motivated staff who are
responsible for managing a well-funded liberal arts college library with
high service standards.

Responsibilities:

* serves as primary Innovative Interfaces, Inc. (III) integrated system
  manager and as principal automation vendor contact; performs upgrades,
  coordinates release documentation, and manages implementation of new
  features; consults with library staff on procurement of new III
  products and services
* coordinates hardware and software support for library's microcomputers
  and peripherals
* serves as library's liaison to Academic Computing & Networking Services
  (ACNS); works with ACNS staff to provide networked access to library
  information and services
* responsible for planning, budgeting, purchasing, and maintaining
  library computing hardware and software
* helps library staff maintain current awareness of information
  technology
* participates in reference service, including evening and week-end
  Reference Desk rotation

Qualifications:

* MLS from an ALA-accredited program
* demonstrated expertise with integrated library systems, networked
  environments, microcomputer hardware and software, Internet and
  client/server technology, and electronic information delivery
* demonstrated knowledge of current trends regarding: information
  technology, the relationships of libraries to their constituents, and
  the relationships of libraries to academic computing centers
* poise in trouble-shooting situations; ability to handle deftly the
  pressures of competing demands for time
* patience and adeptness when assisting and instructing less technically
  sophisticated learners
* ability and willingness to adapt to a changing work environment
* seasoned analytical, problem-solving, organizational, interpersonal,
  and oral and written communication skills
* ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative
  decision-making team

* HTML authoring experience
* Web server administration experience
* knowledge of MARC format
* 3 years of professional library experience, preferably in an academic
